Tennessee vs Penn State

The game of the day. I realize there are other games, but this is the one that is important.

UT is favored but Penn State always brings a good game to a bowl. And they have spanked us in bowls before, so this should be a great game.

Closure?

I heard a fly buzz when I died;
The stillness round my form
Was like the stillness in the air
Between the heaves of storm.

The eyes beside had wrung them dry,
And breaths were gathering sure
For that last onset, when the king

CNN Vows Discretion with Saddam Execution Video — But Has No Problem Showing U.S. Soldiers Being Killed

December 29th, 2006

**UPDATE: al-IRAQIYA TELEVISION VIDEO OF SADDAM EXECUTION AT BOTTOM OF THIS POST**

This is unbelievable ! I have watched Anderson Cooper on CNN twice in the last hour explain to viewers that they will use all means possible to not shock their audience with gruesome execution video of Saddam Hussein. CNN has the audacity to say this while simultaneously showing file footage of the dead bodies of gassed Kurds.

CNN is responsible for showing terrorist propaganda video from Iraqi insurgents of snipers killing U.S. Soldiers — No moral claim here! To further this hypocrisy they also have this stuff available for viewing at their “CNN On Demand” web site!

Bombs Shake Bangkok Thailand - New Year’s Events Cancelled

There have been a number of unexpected attacks in the capital:

A senior police spokesman says at least 12 people have been injured in Bangkok after four bombs exploded in the Thai capital as revellers were preparing to bring in the New Year.

The four explosions are thought to have happened within 90 minutes of each other across the capital, beginning at 5:30pm (local time) at central Bangkok’s Victory Monument.

“I have received reports of bombs at Victory Monument which injured four people. The second site was at Klong Toey which injured six people, two of them children,” Ajiravid Subarnbhesaj, national police spokesman, said on Thai television.

Captain's Quarters about Bush:

An Overlooked Legacy?

The Washington Post notes an overlooked part of the George Bush presidency, one that gets almost no attention despite the constant focus on the region. Under Bush, the US has tripled aid to Africa, with even more increases proposed for the next two years:

President Bush's legacy is sure to be defined by his wielding of U.S. military power in Afghanistan and Iraq, but there is another, much softer and less-noticed effort by his administration in foreign affairs: a dramatic increase in U.S. aid to Africa.

Saddam had approximately 40 of his own relatives murdered.

In updates at the end of this post, Hot Air has video of Saddam being prepared for execution. As a bonus, there are three different stories about what Saddam’s last words were. He said “Allahu Akbar,” or something about Palestine being Arab, or a sarcastic “Muqtada.” Take your pick.

It just goes to show: you can’t get a consistent story about anything out of Iraq — even when the event is videotaped.

UPDATE: Xrlq says that this may be a link to a video of the execution. He can’t get it to load, and I can’t see it on a Treo anyway.

More on Spain terror / Guardian for the Islamists
News about the amount of explosives, the damage could have been much worth, thankfully I have not read of any deaths (as of yet).
200 kgs of explosive used in ETA blast: Spain

Agence France-Presse

Madrid, December 30, 2006

Spanish police said some 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of explosive were used in Saturday's car bomb at Madrid airport which ended a nine-month ceasefire by armed Basque separatist group ETA.

Police based their estimate on the extent of the damage caused at a carpark at the brand new terminal four of the airport and the power of the explosion, which generated a huge pall of black smoke and shattered windows, the Europa Press news agency reported.

Investigators were checking hours of closed-circuit video to try to glean clues as to the identity of the bombers, who blew up a burgundy-coloured Renault van. (link)

This is one way to end a cease-fire. The government should look at ending terrorists groups instead of signing cease-fires. There is a reason they are terrorists after all.

Can you tell who the Guardian is really rooting for?
Not a shot was fired yet the Somali jihad was suddenly over...

Xan Rice, in Nairobi
Sunday December 31, 2006
The Observer

Their fortress fell without a shot. After just nine days of clashes in Somalia's hinterland, the Islamists who had vowed to fight to the death abandoned Mogadishu, the city they had governed since June. From having controlled most of southern and central Somalia, they were holed up yesterday in the southern port city of Kismaayo, facing annihilation by Ethiopian troops.

Ali Mohamed Ghedi, Prime Minister in Somalia's transitional government - an irrelevance until last week - rode triumphantly into Mogadishu on Friday, announcing the end of 'terrorism' in the country. Ethiopia, which together with the US has stoked fears about the rise of a terrorist state {emp mine: LN} in the Horn of Africa, was basking in the success of a campaign that was swifter and more successful than anyone had predicted. (link)

Later on in the article the Guardian writer shows true colors again. With a reference to 'Black Hawk Down' and other 'suck-up' type phrases, the writer leaves no doubt as to the fact that we should lament the lastest move against Islam.

From talking about how 'safe' Mogadishu was after the Islamic Council took over, to the failed U.S. policy of backing the warlords who held the capital before them, the Guardian takes new meaning to the phrase 'kissing up'.

I feel sorry for the people of the U.K., at least our MSM attempts to hide it's loyalties to the terrorists (most of the time). It seems the MSM in the U.K. can't be bothered.

What's wrong with (illegal) immigration?
Taking the jobs that Americans won't:

WND
INVASION USA
Deported illegal who shot officers killed
California patrolmen fired on as they sat in their cruiser

© 2006 WorldNetDaily.com

An illegal immigrant who had been deported from the United States several times but returned each time and now was being sought for wounding two police officers in Long Beach, Calif., has died in a shooting with officers who tracked him to a taco stand in Santa Ana, authorities have confirmed.

Oscar Gallegos

Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters said Oscar Gabriel Gallegos, wanted for the shooting of Long Beach officers Abram Yap and Roy Wade Jr. as they sat in their squad car Dec. 22, died while trying to shoot three of his officers with a .40-caliber Glock equipped with a laser sight. Walters told the Orange County Register that Gallegos carried two fully loaded magazines in his pocket during the confrontation.

"He was either going to kill the officers or be killed," Walters said. "Fortunately, the right person got killed."

The Long Beach officers, who had stopped Gallegos for running a red light, are recovering from their injuries in the hospital, officials said. (link)

This guy should be the poster-boy for illegal immigration. At least he won't be shooting at American citizens anymore. Of course, the fact the he was here illegally doesn't mean he wouldn't have done this type of thing if he was a legal immigrant, but it does show the danger of having illegals here. It's bad enough when people who have the RIGHT to live here do this kind of thing, but for us not to work on our borders in light of situations such as this is reprehensible.

Haitian refugees come ashore at Jupiter Island

Listen to this article or download audio file.Click-2-Listen

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Thursday, December 28, 2006

UPDATED: 11:44 p.m. December 28, 2006

Two Haitians were found dead after a group of about 17 boaters came ashore near Jupiter Island Thursday night, likely as part of a drug and human trafficking operation, authorities said.

The group reached land about 9:45 p.m. near 691 South Beach Road, near the Martin-Palm Beach County line, and scattered into a wooded area.

They left drugs and guns at the scene, then led authorities on a massive manhunt that spanned both sides of the county line. Officials found two dead people in the area, at least one in the water.

Believing the rest of the group might be armed, about 80 law enforcment officials from at least five agencies fanned out using K-9s and helicopters, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies considered the group armed and possibly dangerous. They urged Jupiter Island residents to call 911 if they saw anything suspicious. Based on the number of footprints in the area and other information, deputies believed there were about 17 boaters, including the two found dead.

By 11 p.m., authorities captured 11 boaters and about three or four others were still on the loose, said Martin County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Bruce Pinkman. Helicopters roamed the skies above the county line, spotting fleeing boaters and radioing their location down to authorities on the ground, who captured them. The boaters were detained at a nearby park, authorities said. (link)

Seriously, these guys were just looking to get into business, what's wrong with that? Hopefully they will catch the rest of the scum and deal harshly with them. Deportation should be the final order after some serious jail-time. Florida is bad enough (see statitics on crime) without the worlds' criminals crashing the party.

blog advertising
Pay-per-post in a move to secure blog advertising has acquired Performancing.com. I have used Performacing on my firefox browser and like it (I stopped using it when I switched to beta and not sure if it works with the new blogger yet) but never used the metrics programs that PPP also purchased.

This looks like a good move for PPP in establishing that they are 'here to stay' . Customers and advertisers alike will be able to use the metric tools to track the good posts from the bad (could be bad news for some, like me) and the bloggers can use Performancing to blog more easily (especially if you use blogger).

I haven't done a PPP post in awhile, just havn't seen any good opportunities to use it. I don't want to plug things I have not done/tried or disagree with (unless they want good or bad opinions of course) and most of the good opportunities are for higher PR blogs (I'm still a lowly zero on the PR scale), so my options are somewhat limited.

Of course the fact that I've been working alot and doing family things might have something to do with it also :) But with this new acquisition, I may have to do more of these posts. At least I need to sign up for metrics and fully test the capabilities of it.

On the whole, good move for both PPP and Performacing, sure to help a legion of bloggers and advertisers meet and get happy together.

Indian nurses face racist attack in UK

Nurses from India working in hospitals in northern Liverpool have recently been attacked by racist thugs, leaving them terrified to move out of their flats, according to reports from Liverpool.

Four blocks of flats in Falconhall Road, Fazakerley, where the nurses recruited by the National Health Service reside, have been attacked. The racist abuse hurled at the nurses is reportedly getting worse.

Minu Subash, a nurse working at the Fazakerley hospital, was quoted as saying: “We are really afraid to go out at night because of young boys roaming around outside. I have stopped them trying to take my car and they tried to smash their way into a flat through the window. “When you say anything to them or chase them away, you get ‘Paki this’ and ‘Paki that’. It is all the time.” (link)
The article never tells who the suspected youths are, no background at all. Usually when the press won't identify 'youths' they are usually muslim (might not be true in this case, but it usually is). I wonder if these women are being targetted more for being from India, or not wearing proper clothing?

Somali Islamists vow to fight on as government holds talks with clans

· Protests in Mogadishu at role of Ethiopian forces
· Reliance on warlords weakens administration

Xan Rice in Nairobi
Saturday December 30, 2006
The Guardian

Somali Islamist leaders vowed yesterday to continue fighting against pro-government forces yesterday even as Ethiopian MiG fighter jets buzzed over Kismayo, their last stronghold.

The Islamists fled from Mogadishu, 260 miles north of Kismayo, on Thursday after being surrounded by Ethiopian troops and fighters loyal to the Somali government. Hassan Dahir Aweys and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the top two Islamist leaders, were joined in the southern port city by several thousand militiamen and scores of "technicals" - pick-up trucks with machine guns mounted on the back. (link)

After running as fast as they could from Mogadishu, the Islamists claim they will not leave Somalia and will fight to the end. Of course, they said that before they fled the capital too, so we'll have to see. It's amazing what an army can do to the recruited rabble of terrorists groups when giving the free reign to do the job. If the Islamists fight as hard as they have so far, look for a free Somalia before the month is out.

Prayers for the Senator : Death to the Tyrant : Goodbye to the Flu
Our prayers continue to go out for the Senator from South Dakota:
Johnson Remains in Critical Condition
Dec 28 5:52 PM US/Eastern

WASHINGTON

Sen. Tim Johnson turned 60 on Thursday, two weeks after emergency surgery to repair a brain hemorrhage that has left him in critical condition.

Julianne Fisher, a spokeswoman for the South Dakota Democrat, said Johnson won't be present in the first days of the new Congress next week but is continuing to improve. She said he is responsive to directions from his wife but has not yet spoken.

It's too early to tell how long recovery will take, Fisher said.

In a statement Thursday, Johnson's doctors said he remains in intensive care at George Washington University Hospital. They have released few new details about Johnson's condition and prognosis since the days after the Dec. 13 surgery to stop bleeding in his brain.

Dr. Vivek Deshmukh, head of Johnson's surgical team, said in a statement that the South Dakota senator's overall condition has improved and he is gradually being weaned off sedation to help his brain heal. (link)

He's not talking yet, but is responding, so good news for him and his family.

Good news from the M.E.:

Saddam to be hanged by Sunday

Ex-dictator’s execution expected to be carried out by start of Eid holiday

NBC News and news services
Updated: 2 minutes ago

Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, sentenced to death for his role in 148 killings in 1982, will have his sentence carried out by Sunday, NBC News reported Thursday. According to a U.S. military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Saddam will be hanged before the start of the Eid religious holiday, which begins this Sunday.

The hanging could take place as early as Friday, NBC’s Richard Engel reported.

The U.S. military received a formal request from the Iraqi government to transfer Saddam to Iraqi authorities, NBC reported on Thursday, which is one of the final steps required before his execution. His sentence, handed down last month, ordered that he be hanged within 30 days. (link)

There's a bit of a controversy brewing on this one, HotAir has the scoop. Seems the government can't decide on just when he is to be hung.

Snake oil salemsen line up:
The vaccine to cure every strain of flu
by FIONA MacRAE
Last updated at 22:20pm on 28th December 2006

British scientists are on the verge of producing a revolutionary flu vaccine that works against all major types of the disease.

Described as the 'holy grail' of flu vaccines, it would protect against all strains of influenza A - the virus behind both bird flu and the nastiest outbreaks of winter flu.

Just a couple of injections could give long-lasting immunity - unlike the current vaccine which has to be given every year.

The brainchild of scientists at Cambridge biotech firm Acambis, working with Belgian researchers, the vaccine will be tested on humans for the first time in the next few months.

A similar universal flu vaccine, being developed by Swiss vaccine firm Cytos Biotechnology, could also be tested on people in 2007 - and the vaccines on the market in around five years.

Importantly, the vaccines would also be quicker and easier to make than the traditional jabs, meaning vast quantities could be stockpiled against a global outbreak of bird flu.

Martin Bachmann, of Cytos, said: "You could really stockpile it. In the case of a pandemic, that would be a huge advantage.

"If you were to start making a traditional vaccine at the start of a pandemic, there is no way there would be enough."

The Government believes a bird flu pandemic is inevitable, killing 50,000 people in Britain alone.

However, it acknowledges that the bug could be much more lethal - infecting one in two people and claiming more than 700,000 lives. (link)

This would be great news if it pans out. Some time in '12 we may say goodbye to the flu. This would really help my little girl who would be eleven at that time. She is prone to getting sick.

Islamists on the run : Crying to the UN
In the 'How to win a war' department:

Troops enter Mogadishu; refugees drown

By SALAD DUHUL, Associated Press Writer 24 minutes ago

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali government troops backed by Ethiopian forces rolled into Mogadishu without firing a shot Thursday, a striking gain in its bid to recapture the country from an Islamic movement that had once seemed nearly invincible.

Off the coast, Yemeni authorities opened fire on boats filled with refugees fleeing the fighting, and at least 17 people drowned in the Gulf of Aden when one vessels capsized, the United Nations refugee agency said Thursday. About 140 people were missing, the Geneva-based agency said.

Hours before the troops entered the capital, the Islamic militants fled Mogadishu, pledging to make a last stand in southern Somalia. (link)

That's what you can do when the entire world isn't against you doing your job. When niceties and such aren't the first priority in a war. One wonders where all the protests for the Ethiopian invasion are? I havn't seen any printed or heard any on the news lately. Maybe it's only the U.S. and Israel that can't goto war (of any kind).

Leave me with the evil Americans:

Saddam lawyer seeks to prevent handover

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA, Associated Press Writer 42 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Saddam Hussein's chief lawyer implored world leaders on Thursday to prevent the United States from handing over the ousted leader to Iraqi authorities for execution, saying he should enjoy protection from his enemies as a "prisoner of war."

Iraq's highest court on Tuesday rejected Saddam's appeal against his conviction and death sentence for the killing of 148 Shiites in the northern city of Dujail in 1982. The court said the former president should be hanged within 30 days.

"According to the international conventions, it is forbidden to hand a prisoner of war to his adversary," Saddam's lawyer Khalil al-Dulaimi said.

"I urge all the international and legal organizations, the United Nations secretary-general, the Arab League and all the leaders of the world to rapidly prevent the American administration from handing the president to the Iraqi authorities," he told The Associated Press. (link)

If the Iraqis had Saddam and were handing him over to the U.S. for hanging, I could understand this argument. But since (technically) the Iraqis aren't the enemies of Saddam in this instance, then the point seems to be moot. He was convicted in Iraq, by an Iraqi judge and jury. His sentence will be carried out in Iraq.

Next thing you know, you'll have criminals in this (and other) country beseeching the U.N. to protect them from going to their enemies (ie. jail). Saddam will get his reward for the total mess he made of most of Iraq and the Iraqi people. The 'escalated' violence concern doesn't actual merit much, if taken into context of what is already happening. This would be valid if we had relative peace in the area and then they threatened violence. When the house is burning down, whats one more match?

By JOE BEL BRUNO, AP Business Writer 19 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Wall Street surged higher Wednesday, hurtling the Dow Jones industrials past 12,500 for the first time as year-end bargain hunters picked up stocks across a variety of sectors.

The auto industry was in focus after a meeting between executives at Toyota Motor Corp. and Ford Motor Co. sparked hope about a potential alliance between the two rivals. Shares of both companies moved higher on the speculation.

Further takeover activity lent support to the overall market after McClatchy Co. announced late Tuesday it agreed to sell the Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis to a private equity fund. Also, graphics communication company Cenveo Inc. agreed to buy rival Cadmus Communications Corp.

But investors looking to buff up their portfolios by year's end were behind most of the gains after major indexes languished last week. (link)

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Former Democratic vice presidential nominee
John Edwards jumped into the presidential race Wednesday a day earlier than he'd planned, prodded by an Internet glitch to launch a candidacy focused on health care, taxes and other domestic issues.

The North Carolina Democrat's campaign accidentally went live with his election Web site a day before an announcement Thursday that was supposed to use Hurricane-ravaged New Orleans as a backdrop.

The slip-up gave an unintended double-meaning to his campaign slogan on the John Edwards '08 Web site: "Tomorrow begins today."

Aides quickly shut down the errant Web site but could not contain news of the obvious, even in the shadows of former President Ford's death.

"Better a day earlier than a day late," said Jennifer Palmieri, an Edwards adviser. (link)

So his site was up early so couldn't take advantage of the people of New Orleans. Doesn't he think that just maybe they have suffered enough and he should help them instead of exploiting them? (probably not) Well, there goes Hillary's chances (hehTM). With so many candidates staking their particular field out, Edwards comes in as 'the rich man for the poor man' candidate. Although his record doesn't reflect that, or his lifestyle; that is the way he will portray himself with ample help from the MSM. (Note: when all candidates are favorites of the MSM, who gets slandered? Republicans :)

One more hurdle down:
Appeals Court Upholds Saddam Hussein's Death Sentence

Tuesday, December 26, 2006

Saddam Hussein / AP
BAGHDAD, Iraq — An Iraqi appeals court has upheld the death sentence ordered for Saddam Hussein at his first trial, Iraq's national security adviser said Tuesday.

"The appeals court approved the verdict to hang Saddam," Mouwafak al-Rubaie told The Associated Press.

On Nov. 5, an Iraqi court sentenced Saddam to the gallows for the 1982 killings of 148 people from a Shiite Muslim town after an attempt on his life there.

The decision of the appeals court must be ratified by President Jalal Talabani and Iraq's two vice presidents. Talabani opposes the
death penalty but has in the past deputized a vice president to sign an execution order on his behalf — a substitute that was legally accepted.

Once the decision is ratified, Saddam and other co-defendants in the trial would be hanged within 30 days. (link)
I know some of you aren't for the death penalty, but I am. Saddam deserves it for the things he did to his people. Millions of people would be alive today had this man not come into power. The abuses by he and his family on the people of Iraq will forever haunt the Iraqi people as they move toward a free country (if they can get the ethnic purging under control that is).

U.K. Soldiers Watch for Reprisals After Police Station Raid

Tuesday, December 26, 2006

BAGHDAD — British soldiers on Tuesday were on alert for reprisals a day after they raided a police station in the southern city of Basra, killing seven gunmen in an effort to stop renegade Iraqi officers from executing their prisoners.

"We fully expect more attacks on our bases and on Basra stations, but that's nothing out of the ordinary," Maj. Charlie Burbridge, a military spokesman, said Tuesday. "But this is part of a long-term rehabilitation of the Iraqi police service, to make it more effective and more accountable, and ultimately provide better security for the people of Basra."

After the British stormed the police station, they removed 127 prisoners, who showed evidence of torture, then evacuated the building before blowing it up, he said.

Burbridge had previously said only 76 prisoners were in the station, but later said soldiers miscounted the prisoners because the operation was done under cover of darkness.

Some 800 of the British military's 7,200 troops in Iraq were involved in the operation, he said.

A spokesman for Iraq's defense minister said Monday that the Iraqi interior and defense ministries approved the Basra operation, but some members of the Basra provincial council said they were not notified. (link)

Find a problem, fix said problem. Say what you want about the Brits, they usually do what they set out to do (if they ever decide exactly what to do). 'Dirty' cops in Iraq is a major problem when trying to rebuild not only the army but the police corps itself. At least this group will no longer be executing prisoners based on their whims.

MySpace / Israel dreams

For last minute travel, you don have much choice and cannot particularly look for cheap flights as well as economical hotels. Most probably you will have to compromise on the flights. For stay you can try the las vegas resorts and can use rental cars to travel in the city.

Any MySpace users out there? (of course there are thousands of them) You may want to read this article.

MySpace Users Big Targets for ID Theives
LOS ANGELES - MySpace devotee Kary Rogers was expecting to see a gut-busting video when a friend from the popular online hangout messaged him a link.

First, though, he was directed to a page where he was supposed to re-enter his password. Rogers realized that someone was trying to steal his information, and he didn't take the bait. At best, he would be spammed with junk e-mails; worse, the Web thief might steal his real-life identity.

"I immediately went back and changed my password," said Rogers, 29, a network analyst for Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss. (link)

I use it infrequently, but I'll make sure to check my links for phish myself.

Olmert decides that if the terrorists won't stop shooting, we'll give them more 'incentive':

Israeli PM Orders Checkpoints Dismantled

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel agreed Monday to remove some of the military roadblocks that have hindered Palestinian travel in the West Bank, one of several gestures aimed at boosting moderate President Mahmoud Abbas in his bitter struggle with the militant Islamic Hamas.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert approved streamlining checkpoints and removing roadblocks "to strengthen moderate (Palestinian) elements," according to a statement from his office. Olmert has already offered $100 million in frozen tax income to Abbas and indicated he might release some Palestinian prisoners.

Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh said inspections would be eased at 16 checkpoints, and 27 unmanned roadblocks would be removed. Also, crossings for people and cargo between Gaza and Israel would be upgraded "in order to accelerate the economy in Gaza to lessen the poverty and despair."

Olmert singled out Abbas as a Palestinian leader who is interested in peace with Israel - a clear contrast to Hamas, which rejects the existence of a Jewish state in an Islamic Middle East and has rebuffed international demands to renounce violence. Hamas controls the Palestinian government. (link)

AP Photo/MOHAMMED BALLAS
What will it take for an Israeli leader to step up and defend Israel? Probably about the same it would take some in this country to do the same (no names).

With all the carrots Israel has given the palestinian-arabs over the years, they should be fat and happy, yet with each new 'peace offering' only more rockets and terrorist attacks occur. The terrorists (Fatah and Hammas) aren't interested in making peace with Israel and never will be, they want Israel and the Jews to be destroyed. Just like Iran (who will shortly have the capability to do just that). Wake up folks, the fat lady is humming off stage.

James Brown / Iran in Iraq
A legend is gone:
Legendary Singer James Brown Dies at 73
Dec 25 4:15 AM US/Eastern

ATLANTA

James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured "Godfather of Soul," whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.

Copsidas said the cause of death was uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," he said.

Pete Allman, a radio personality in Las Vegas who had been friends with Brown for 15 years, credited Brown with jump-starting his career and motivating him personally and professionally.

"He was a very positive person. There was no question he was the hardest working man in show business," Allman said. "I remember Mr. Brown as someone who always motivated me, got me reading the Bible."

Along with Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and a handful of others, Brown was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. At least one generation idolized him, and sometimes openly copied him. His rapid- footed dancing inspired Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson among others. Songs such as David Bowie's "Fame," Prince's "Kiss," George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song" were clearly based on Brown's rhythms and vocal style. (link)

Prayers goto the family and friends, he was a great man who lived a long life.

U.S. Is Holding Iranians Seized in Raids in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Dec. 24 — The American military is holding at least four Iranians in Iraq, including men the Bush administration called senior military officials, who were seized in a pair of raids late last week aimed at people suspected of conducting attacks on Iraqi security forces, according to senior Iraqi and American officials in Baghdad and Washington.

The Bush administration made no public announcement of the politically delicate seizure of the Iranians, though in response to specific questions the White House confirmed Sunday that the Iranians were in custody.

Gordon D. Johndroe, the spokesman for the National Security Council, said two Iranian diplomats were among those initially detained in the raids. The two had papers showing that they were accredited to work in Iraq, and he said they were turned over to the Iraqi authorities and released. He confirmed that a group of other Iranians, including the military officials, remained in custody while an investigation continued, and he said, “We continue to work with the government of Iraq on the status of the detainees.” (link)

Of course we should talk to Iran, these guys are just looking for peace (hehTM).

'Republican war'
Nice little revisionist story at dkos:

It's a Republican War

Sun Dec 24, 2006 at 05:23:28 AM PST

Kevin Drum brings up a good point of discussion here:

Link-- There's no question that conservatives will try to hang our failure in Iraq around liberal peacenik necks, but that's not what's important. What's important is whether they succeed. Public opinion is key, and if they go ahead and do their surge, and it fails, it's going to make the conservative story a lot harder to tell. The public just isn't going to buy it.

One thing BushCo did and did well was in branding this war an exclusively Republican War and cutting Democrats out of what they thought was going to be the credit for it. So, my guess would be the public is already not going to buy any whining excuses that the media/hippies/bloggers/tree huggers lost the glorious GOP War. And any stragglers still shopping at Right-wingmart aren't going to let a little thing like reality disrupt their purchase.

Nevertheless, it wouldn't hurt to remind people every chance we get -- especially as revelations of fraud or profiteering come to light, more Americans die, and even politicians with a purple stain on their finger run away screaming from Bush and his war over the next year -- that this is a Republican War started by a Republican President managed by a Republican Cabinet enabled by a Rubber-stamp Republican Congress and cheered on by Republican media operatives. In short: Republicans Lost The War. (link)

Now we all know that the democrats have been against this war from the beginning right? And that the President went to war without their approval. So it's obviously not 'their' war (are they American?) it's only the Republicans war.

By these votes on H J Res. 114 (To authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against Iraq) we see that indeed it was only the Republicans that voted to goto war. Of course, some of these people will be highly suprised that they are now Republicans (does this mean we still have majorities in both the House and Senate?). When people fall to saying that a war our country is involved in (that had bipartisian support and was voted legally by Congress on) is a 'Republican' war, then there are more problems than simply support for the war.

Support for the country may be an issue in and of itself. Of course you can't claim anyone is unpatriotic simply because they don't support the war (everyone has the right to support it or not), but you can infer what you want about people that don't support their country.

Merry Christmas in Alabama
Story from the Press-Register about saying Merry Christmas in Alabama. Seems 88% of people in this state support Christmas and the ability to say Merry Christmas on the job. That also includes nativity scenes in public places. The ACLU will have a fit over this one:

Poll: Alabama supports Christmas expression

Sunday, December 24, 2006
By SEBASTIAN KITCHEN
Capital Bureau

People in Alabama overwhelmingly favor nativity scenes on public property and disapprove of stores mandating that employees use greetings other than "Merry Christmas," according to a Press-Register/University of South Alabama poll.

Eighty-eight percent of respondents agreed that nativity scenes should be allowed on public property, and more than half said the scenes need not include symbols of religions such as Judaism or Buddhism.

The statewide poll of 402 adults was conducted by telephone Dec. 13-17. The margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points. (link)

The article goes on to state the objections of some progressives and such, and harps about the need to include other symbols (secular or other religions) to keep the scenes (nativity) from being 'un-constitutional'. If we had a Supreme Court with the gumption to shoot down people like the ACLU and the Americans United for Seperation of Church and State, then we wouldn't have all these problems with people getting 'offended' by scenes. How many such offended people are monetarily motivated? You'd have to look into the case histories, but there's a money trail in every anti-christian case I've read about dealing with 'offense' and the 'seperation of church and state'.

Why is it that the ACLU and their ilk cannot or will not read the entirety of the 1st amendment and realize that making a law against a religion is also against the constitution. Why can't the SCOTUS see that? Is it simply because people in the world are too 'pc' to care anymore?

This country was based on the will of the majority ruling. In the past few years/decades we have become ruled by the offended minority. Any 'group' can easily get any law passed simply by being offended by something. Especially if it's anti-christian.

Racy pics cost Miss Nevada USA her crown

Miss USA, Tara Conner, left, has a tarnished tiara, while Miss Teen USA, Katie Blair, drew the ire of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Story Highlights

• Photos show queen exposing breast, pulling down her pants
• Miss Nevada was 17, had "lapse of judgment," attorney says
• Miss USA kept tiara when she agreed to go into rehab
• MADD cut its ties with hard-partying Miss Teen USA

NEW YORK (AP) -- Another Miss USA contestant has taken a tumble.

Miss Nevada USA was stripped of her title Thursday after racy photos of her appeared on the Internet, pageant officials said. Some of the photos show Katie Rees, 22, kissing other young women, exposing one of her breasts and pulling down her pants to show her thong underwear at a party in Tampa, Florida.

"Katie Rees has been relieved of her duties as Miss Nevada USA 2007," said Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, which owns the Miss USA pageant and others. (link)

Now that's an extra spicy tale to go with the Miss Usa and Miss Teen 'blunders'. Of course they show no pictures of Miss Nevada's 'indiscretions', but you get the idea. It's not ok to be a typical teen and then compete for these pagaents. Yes people should be able to be what and who they want, but this stuff needs to be known beforehand, so the judges (and sponsors) can make a determination if they want that particular person representing them.

Do I think these women (girls?) should be stripped of their titles and such? Heck no, they shouldn't be punished for being normal people. They should be punished for lying to the organizers of the contest and not telling them that they are typical teenagers; but it is ultimately up to the people putting on the pagaent to make sure they research a little beforehand.

Of course, that doesn't take away the responsibility that these girls have in trying to live up to what they are supposed to represent either, so I guess it's a catch-22. I think in the future, the people chosen will be more strigently 'back'-checked before allowing them to compete and perhaps win.

Still, it does make for interesting reading.

UT vs UT
Tennessee's Duke Crews (32) puts up a shot while defended by Damion James of Texas during the first half their college basketball game Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006 in Knoxville, Tenn. (AP Photo/Wade Payne)
Tennessee's men's team beats Texas for the 2nd straight year! This one was 50-35 at the half (Texas) and looked like a run-away (according to the article, I didn't get to watch). UT (vols) battled back and took the lead with a few seconds left and Texas tied it to send it to OT which the Vols dominated.

Now maybe they will get a little respect in the nation (ESPN, polls, etc.). But the great thing about basketball is the tournament is all that matters (you have to get there, but you don't have to be perfect).

U.S. Airstrike Kills Taliban Commander
KABUL, Afghanistan - A top Taliban military commander described as a close associate of Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar was killed in an airstrike this week close to the border with Pakistan, the U.S. military said Saturday. A purported Taliban spokesman denied the claim.

Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani was killed Tuesday by a U.S. airstrike while traveling by vehicle in a deserted area in the southern province of Helmand, the U.S. military said. Two associates also were killed, it said.

Osmani, regarded as one of three top associates of Omar, is the highest-ranking Taliban leader that the coalition has claimed to have killed or captured since U.S. forces deployed in Afghanistan to oust the Taliban regime in late 2001 for hosting bin Laden. (link)

Hopefully Omar will be next. Of course now that the Fwench have turned tail and ran, maybe we can get some real work done in this part of the world.

Saudi Lawyer Takes On Religious Court System

Rights Cases Used To Press for Change

Washington Post Foreign Service
Saturday, December 23, 2006; Page A01

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi human rights lawyer Abdul-Rahman al-Lahem said he had been waiting years for a case like this: A woman and her daughter, both accused of promiscuity, were followed by the morals police as they left a private residence on the outskirts of the capital.

The police, who enforce adherence to Saudi Arabia's strict religious laws, beat up the women's driver and drove off with them locked in the back of the car. When the car broke down half an hour later, the officers abandoned them in the stranded vehicle.

In his Riyadh office, human rights lawyer Abdul-Rahman al-Lahem, right, talks to a man whose mother and sister are suing the country's religious police. "If we win this case," he said, "it will prove that nobody is above the rule of law." (By Faiza Saleh Ambah -- The Washington Post)

The police assumed that the women had been visiting male friends. But the two had been at the home of female relatives. And unlike the thousands who had previously been intimidated into dropping their grievances, they insisted on taking their kidnappers to court. The case, which goes to trial next week, will give Lahem a chance to finally confront the powerful morals police, whom he considers the country's worst human rights offenders.

Lahem, a 35-year-old father of two, contends that the police oppress people in the name of religion and act as if the law doesn't apply to them. He wants to prove them wrong.

"If we win this case, it will have more of an impact than a dozen lectures or newspaper articles," he said. "It will send a powerful message to them, and to the public, who view men of the cloth as untouchable. It will prove that nobody is above the rule of law." (link)

Maybe this will be the beginning of the end of sharia.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Assailants fired on the car of a senior Palestinian security official Saturday, wounding him, a bodyguard and a girl in intensifying factional fighting in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Saturday he hopes to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the coming week, but said no date has been set. The meeting would be the first between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in a year and a half. (link)
Makes you wonder what a war looks like? Seriously though, does anyone (Olmert and Abbas included) think that anything will come of a meeting between the two? As long as Hamas and Fatah are 'armed' branches of anything, peace will not exist. The palestinian-arabs will never achieve statehood if they cannot at least attempt to build a state. One common army for defense would be a fresh and much needed start. Disbanding terrorist groups and providing basic laws and services to the people that live in the territories would also help. But there number one (and only for Hamas) concern is the irradication of Israel. And Jimmah thinks they deserve to be able to do just that.

A little background on the Spanish problem:
The Jihadist Dream to Liberate Spain
By Aaron Hanscom
FrontPageMagazine.com | December 22, 2006

Earlier this year a
jihadist document calling for the liberation of so-called occupied territories and issued by the al-Qaeda-linked group Nadim al-Magrebi was posted on the Islamic extremist website Alansar. In most European capitals, where the cult of Palestinianism reins supreme, such demands are often met with approval since the occupied land in question is usually Israeli. But this time the statement addressed Spain—not Israel. It warned of a “holy war against the infidel Spanish state which has occupied the two cities.”

The two cities in question are Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish enclaves on the North African coast which Spain gained control of nearly 500 years ago. Melilla, with a population of 64,400, is home to 26,400 Muslims; Ceuta’s Muslims number 27,000 out of a population of 71,500. The Spanish newspaper El Pais reports that Muslims will become the majority in the next decade.

Demographics, however, don’t pose the only threat to Spain’s future. This month 11 Islamist radicals, ten Spaniards and a Moroccan, were arrested in Ceuta for planning to stage terrorist attacks in the country. (Two of the brothers of Hamed Abderrahaman Ahmed, the one-time Guantanamo prisoner who was eventually exonerated by a Spanish court, were among those arrested.) The seven suspects later detained by Judge Baltasar Garzon were charged with belonging to the Salafia Yihadia terrorist group which forms part of the al-Qaeda network in North Africa. In a statement Garzon said that the group had considered stealing weapons and explosives from a military base and carrying out an attack during Ceuta's annual fiesta. Sources claim that at least one member had already written a suicide note. The investigation of the group which began in March of 2005 also revealed that the individuals detained were in contact with two Spanish soldiers of Moroccan origin from whom they hoped to obtain explosives and strategic information. (link)

A little reading for you about the Spanish difficulties with Islamic Jihad and what they (jihadis) propose for your country.

Spain, like France has no beef in the ongoing War on Terror in the Middle East. They have pulled all their troops out of Iraq and as a country decided to stay out of it. What will they do when the war comes to them?

Spain Cancels Centuries Old Tradition in Fear of Suicide Bombers

Filed under: Dhimmitude by Chad Evans at 3:24 pm EDT

From The Brussels Journal:

Spain will no longer burn effigies of the Prophet Muhammad. Muslim armies occupied Spain from 711 to 1492. For the past five centuries the Spanish have traditionally celebrated the 1492 liberation from the Moors (as the Muslims were locally called) with local village festivals during which the battles against the Moors were reenacted and effigies of the Muslim prophet – the so-called “la Mahoma” – were mocked, thrown from the windows, and burned.

Last year the town of Bocairent near Valencia decided to discontinue the tradition of centuries. The town did not want to risk becoming the target of Islamic suicide bombers. On Monday the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that this year the other Valencian towns are also abolishing ancient traditions which are perceived to be offensive to Muslims. The people of Beneixama used to stuff the head of the Mahoma with firecrackers which went off as the onlookers applauded. This year Beneixama decided to abolish this part of the celebration. Antonio Valdés, the local mayor, told El Pais: “This was not an essential part of the festivities. It could hurt the sensitivities of some. We decided to avoid that.” The reconquista will still be commemmorated, but without “aggression” towards Muhammad.

The former Moorish provinces of Spain, or “Al-Andalus” as Islamists call it, are the only part of the world besides Israel which was once Muslim territory but was lost to Islam. Osama bin Laden dreams of recapturing it. By renouncing their ancient traditions the Spanish seem to indicate that they deserve the return of the Moors.

That, like the German theater closing down a three year-old play, is Islamophobia. (link via IntheBullpen blog)

Fold is what it looks like.

Bottom story of the day
I love Best of from WSJ normally, but this story is abit much:

Pavlov's Blog
If you ever want an illustration of the psychological phenomenon known as conditioned reflex, write a disdainful article about blogs and get it into print. Our talented young colleague Joe Rago did just that yesterday, and, predictably enough, he was met with howls of outrage from the herd of iconoclasts collectively known as the blogosphere.

We need to clarify one thing, though. Chris Muir's Day by Day cartoon yesterday was devoted to faulting Rago's piece for about the most trivial error imaginable: a missing period at the end of a paragraph. Once that mistake was corrected online, Muir updated his cartoon (quoting verbatim): "Note: WSJ editurz have korrected punshuation punctuashion the period thing 10amEST.-Ed." Blogger Glenn Reynolds sneered, "I notice that Rago has fixed the typo, . . . after just a few hours, a speed that is only a bit slower than the average blogger."

Actually, it was your humble columnist (who also serves as editor of this Web site) who fixed this typo. What's more, we went back and checked, and it turns out that we, not Rago, were responsible for the typo in the first place. The period was there in the print edition, and apparently we deleted it through an errant keystroke while we were preparing the article for online posting.

You can still blame the MSM, though. After all, even though what we do has some resemblance to blogging, we are part of the mighty Wall Street Journal. (link)

A part of the 'MSM' taking up for a fellow journalist? Notice the reporting of the 'sneer' by Glenn Reynolds (InstaPundit). How does Taranto know that Glenn was sneering? I didn't see anything in the link (although he probably was, you know how wild Glenn is). I read quite abit about Rago's comments on many blogs (and read Rago's column myself). Not too many posts I saw were not warranted by Rago's (and by extension now Taranto's) holier-than-thou attitude concerning 'journalists' vs. bloggers.

After what I've seen lately, I'll take the bloggers (en masse) over the journalists. Of course, no one blogger (or even small group) can compete with the MSM, but on the whole, with the instant checks and balances that the blogosphere has any and all errors are instantly leapt on. In the MSM world, errors are caught but the care doesn't seem to be there.

And really, how many didn't think the day by day cartoon was funny? hehTM

Scientists link weight to gut bacteria

AFP/File Photo: A woman stands outside a sandwich shop. Certain gut bacteria may encourage obesity, according to...
WASHINGTON - Maybe it's germs that are making you fat.

Researchers found a strong connection between obesity and the levels of certain types of bacteria in the gut. That could mean that someday there will be novel new ways of treating obesity that go beyond the standard advice of diet and exercise.

According to two studies being published in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature, both obese mice and people had more of one type of bacteria and less of another kind.
A "microbial component" appears to contribute to obesity, said study lead author Jeffrey Gordon, director of Washington University's Center for Genome Sciences.

Obese humans and mice had a lower percentage of a family of bacteria called Bacteroidetes and more of a type of bacteria called Firmicutes, Gordon and his colleagues found. (link)
Just what people need, another way to get fat. Of course if this really does pan out, maybe they can give you a bacteria to make you lose weight?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who heads a militia feared by Iraq's Sunnis, is considering a one-month unilateral cease-fire and may push his followers to rejoin the political process after a three-week boycott, officials close to him said.

The issue is expected to come up at a meeting Thursday in the holy city of Najaf between al-Sadr and a delegation representing the seven Shiite groups that form the largest bloc
in Iraq's parliament, the Shiite officials said on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the talks.

Half the delegates traveled to Najaf on Wednesday night, and were gathered Thursday morning at the home of the country's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, an official in al-Sistani's office said on condition of anonymity because of political sensitivities. The others were traveling to Najaf on Thursday, he said. (link)
Will this cease-fire be a standard arab one? (ie: keep shooting each other, but in public call it a cease-fire) Why now? Is it because Iraq and the U.S. are contemplating (whether they should be shot for allowing him to live) targetting Al-Sadr in hopes of stopping the violence there. You would think that a good plan for stopping someone from committing violence (or inciting others to commit it) would be to take them out. Of course, our first plan was to invite him into the government, and that's worked swell. Declare war on Al-Sadr, take the Iraqi army (with U.S. embeds) and wipe the neighborhood of insurgents, repeat on every group that is causing problems. Then the Iraqi army can provide the necessary protection for their country.

Also, notice the source? "...Shiite officials said on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the talks." If it's so damn secret, why are these officials telling the press and why is the press reporting it? There should be a law stating that if you use a secret source, you can't say you are doing it because of the secrecy of the issue.

Troops to Gates: Extra forces would help

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the rest of the Bush administration may be undecided on whether to send more troops to
Iraq, but several soldiers he met with at Camp Victory here on Thursday morning here said extra forces would help.
"I really think we need more troops here. With more presence on the ground, more troops might hold them off long enough to where we can get the Iraqi Army trained up."

The troops may be somewhat at odds with military commanders, who worry that rushing thousands more Americans to the battlefront could prompt Iraqis to slow their effort to take control of their country.

Those concerns are "clearly a consideration" in mapping out future strategy, Gates said. (link)
What a novel approach, asking the people doing the job what they need to do it. Maybe this will catch on (gasp) and the people in charge will show some sense when approaching a difficult situation. Of course, had they simply treated Iraq like a war to begin with, this wouldn't be necessary.

get paid to blog
Seems PayperPost is changing directions and asking (demanding?) posters to disclose the fact that they are being paid to make certain posts if they get paid to blog. I guess I should have read more into it when I applied, since I thought you had to anyway :)

I'm glad I decided to put that I was being paid to post certain things (if they ever actually pay me, so far not) simply because I thought it was the right thing to do. And now looks like it is the required thing to do.

They will be coming out tomorrow with a press release stating that the blogger has to have a disclosure on site, I would think they'd want each post to be disclosed, but I just work for them hehTM.

Ok, this is my 'paid-to-post' post about PayperPost. I still encourage others to look into it, advertisers get relatively cheap advertising (based on page ranks and such) and bloggers get some extra cash for ... posting.

Busy Day
Sorry not any posting done today. Had the day off work and spent it putting together a computer desk for my daughter. After that, we all went to Logan's and ate dinner (steak).

Next it was a letter to Santa (she wants diamond earrings, she's five!) and then off to bed. I'm sure there's just been loads of news, so hopefully someone got something good I can read later on.

Merry Christmas

Re-Miss America
Trump Lets Miss USA Keep Her Job
By ADAM GOLDMAN
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Miss USA Tara Conner, who had come under criticism amid rumors she had been frequenting bars while underage, will be allowed to keep her title, Donald Trump announced Tuesday.

"I've always been a believer in second chances," Trump, who owns the Miss Universe Organization with NBC, said with Conner at his side.

Trump said he and Conner had met earlier Tuesday morning.

"She left a small town in Kentucky and she was telling me that she got caught up in the whirlwind of New York," Trump said. "It's a story that has happened many times before to many women and many men who came to the Big Apple. They wanted their slice of the Big Apple and they found out it wasn't so easy."

Conner won the title in April and has been living in New York. Recent media accounts of heavy drinking brought a storm of criticism, since she was underage at the time. She turned 21 on Monday.

In a tear-choked voice, Conner said, "In no way did I think it would be possible for a second chance to be given to me." (link)

So Mr. Trump (he with no morals) decided he couldn't really judge Miss America's morals hehTM.

Now that she has become 'legal' to do all that partying she was already doing, I guess everything is ok. But what about Miss Teen? She was the one partying with Miss Conner after all.

Yes I'm posting about this simply to put up the picture.

10 things I love about America

17 Dec 2006 12:08 pm

[Daniel]

Over the next few days, alongside all the other stuff, I hope to introduce you to some of the best things on the British blogging and journalism scene. But if I'm going to do that it seems only fair if I start with 10 things I love about America:

1. Loaded potato skins

2. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights

3. Walt Disney

4. The fact that almost everyone you meet in America is incredibly polite

5. The fact that almost everyone you meet in New York isn't

6. The West Wing

7. Martin Luther King

8. The steaks at Morton's

9. The Manhattan Institute

10. The fact that you send your children across the world to risk their lives for liberty and spend billions of your dollars on it, even though the people whose liberty you are saving, including my fellow Europeans, don't say thank you properly

Blogging
Slow day for me today. I spent time at my parents doing Christmas and spent the day with my daughter just 'hangin out' together.

I havn't been able to check out what's going on in the world as of yet but I did post about a bad Santa :)

Tennessee men did beat OK state tonite in hoops (OK State was undefeated and 14/15 in the polls) so it was a good win for them (it was in Nashville, so technically a 'neutral-court' win) and will certainly look good in March when it's time to pick teams for the tournament.

My Cowboys clinched a playoff birth with their win Saturday night and can clinch the division with a win against Philly on Christmas day. Hopefully their defense can step up and shut Garcia down and make this game over quicker than the last one.

Now I'm off to check the news in the world (blogosphere anyway) and maybe post some more. But I doubt it.

Santa busted

'Santa' charged with kidnapping girl

AP Photo: This booking photo released by the Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts on Monday, Dec....

2 hours, 14 minutes ago

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A 55-year-old man dressed as Santa Claus forced an 8-year-old girl to ride in his motorcycle's sidecar for several minutes and was charged with kidnapping, authorities said.

The girl, of Augusta, Ga., and her family stopped at a convenience store off Interstate 20 on Sunday night when they noticed John Michael Barton, dressed in a Santa Claus suit, refueling his motorcycle, police said.

Barton asked the children to come over and look at a stuffed Rudolph he had in his sidecar. Then, he started up his motorcycle and drove away with the 8-year-old girl, authorities said. (link)

Just because it's Christmas it's still not a good idea to take strange kids into your motorcycle side-car. They're not too sure what the deal behind this was, but so far they are treating it as a kidnapping. This old guy has been giving rides to other kids, but the kicker is the father had to do 80mph to catch 'Santa'. Seems a bit too fast to be just giving the kid a treat.

Hopefully they can find out exactly what's going on here. Just from reading the article the old man may be a little senile. While I feel sorry for people that lose their minds (or begin to), it's hard to be too lenient with a man that kidnaps a little girl and leads the father on a chase of speeds up to 80.

Little boy comes 'back from the dead' after car crash

Exclusive By LUCY LAING
Last updated at 22:00pm on 17th December 2006

This is the amazing little boy who has literally come back from the dead after doctors switched off his life support machine.

Doctors said they didn’t hold out any hope for six-year-old Craig Boardman who was given a nil chance of survival after suffering massive injuries after being hit by a truck.

They had already switched off his life support machine once, but he had shown no sign of life so they had to switch it back on.

Miracle: Six-year-old boy wakes from the dead after being hit by truck.

So when doctors switched off the machine for the second time, no-one held out any hope - until Craig took the tinest(sic) of breaths.

Now he has made an amazing recovery and is back home in Dishforth, North Yorkshire, with his relieved parents, who thought they had lost him for ever. (link)

Remarkable and touching story of a little boy that was lost and came back. A very warm story to happen at this particular time of year. Here's hoping the little boy lives a very long and fulfilling life.

Student linked to TB cases at UNA dies
Last Updated:December 17. 2006 12:00AM
Published: December 17. 2006 3:30AM

A student scheduled to receive his master's degree in business administration Friday from the University of North Alabama died at Huntsville Hospital on Thursday.

University officials declined to identify the student, but the TimesDaily has learned that Bikash Agrawal is the fifth student in the university's international program to be linked to two confirmed and two suspected cases of tuberculosis at the university.

All four students are being treated for the disease with a standard drug protocol, said Dr. Karen Landers, area health officer. She said none remains hospitalized or is contagious.

Health officials have not said, however, that Agrawal's death was a result of TB.

Landers said Agrawal's case has been linked to the other four cases. His case was determined through communication across public health areas within the state, she said.

"We are aware of the situation," she said. "But we are satisfied all appropriate action has been taken, and this death won't affect our investigation."

Landers serves a six-county region that includes Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Marion, Walker and Winston counties.

Although he had been a resident of Florence, Agrawal was living in Huntsville at the time of his death. He had taken one course on campus at UNA and another through the online degree program.

David Shields, UNA vice president for student affairs, said the student had not attended an on-campus class in the past two months. (link)

Really, don't do it, the rates of interest they charge are outrageous. I could see where this might come in handy if you just REALLY REALLY needed the money right then and couldn't possible wait, but if there is anyway possible to not do this, I'd recommend that option.

The interest rates are ~17.5% per $100 borrowed, that is a very steep rate for a 2 week loan (loan times may vary) and still 'legal'.

Civil War in Palestine
When will NBC call this a civil war?

Factional Violence in Gaza Escalates

Washington Post Foreign Service
Sunday, December 17, 2006; 11:20 AM

JERUSALEM, Dec. 17--Gunmen opened fire on the convoy of the Palestinian foreign minister from the governing Hamas movement Sunday in the tense aftermath of President Mahmoud Abbas's call for early elections. Hours later a mortar attack on the presidential compound in the Gaza Strip wounded five people and a Palestinian civilian was killed in running gun battles.

Hamas officials condemned the attack on Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar's motorcade, which came as it passed through Gaza City, as an assassination attempt. There were no reports of injuries in the attack on the motorcade. (link)

Not that I'm complaining or anything, as long as Fatah and Hamas are attacking each other, that buys respite from their attacks for the Israeli people.

Now if the world would condemn this violence like they do any violence against the arabs living in Palestine, then it may be a step up. If Israel defended itself against an attack by either of these parties, there would be a new condemnation from the HR committee of the U.N., but since it is arab killing arab, not so much.

You ever wonder why we don't have headlines about factions in Israel killing each other over politics? Or that a red state in the US has attacked the leaders of a blue state? Maybe because the problem isn't with the 'civilized' countries at all, but with the backwater factions that think being a 'victim' entitles them to the right to kill anyone they please and get a free pass in the 'international' community and the MSM.

Jimmah
ex-President Carter and 'Apartheid':

Carter explains his use of 'apartheid'

Talkbacks for this article: 102

Facing controversy over his new book on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, former President Jimmy Carter issued a letter to American Jews explaining his use of the term "apartheid" and sympathizing with Israelis who fear terrorism.

Former US President Jimmy Carter holds a copy of his book "Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid."
Photo: AP

Carter wrote the letter following his meeting Tuesday with a group of rabbis in Arizona. The rabbis said they would not call for a boycott of Carter's book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," but they also would not suggest that anyone read it.

  • Carter defends 'Peace Not Apartheid'
  • Opinion: Carter's compromised statesmanship
  • Opinion: Jimmy Carter, go back to your peanut farm

Carter's book follows the peace negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians during his presidency in 1977-1980. He is critical of all players in not reaching a better accord, but he is especially critical of the Israelis. He previously told The Associated Press that Americans are rarely exposed to anything other than pro-Israeli views in the news media.(link)

  • Jimmah defends his use of the term, states that Jews are not responsible for the 'Israeli lobby' but Christians are. He says that Christians "like him" are taught to believe and defend G-d's chosen people whom Jesus Christ came from. I believe those things also, but I wouldn't call me or anyone I know a 'Christian like him'. He defends what he wrote while at the same time saying he wasn't talking about inside Israel or 'most jews' just the few that want Palestinian land and who's protests include violence.

Has this dimweed ever seen a protest in the middle east? The 'violent' protest tend to heavily come from the anti-Israeli crowd, not the other way around. What about the 'palestinian' people? Whence did this group of people come from? History will not show their origins, since they didn't exist until someone named them that. They speak longingly of the 'right of return' yet they refuse that right to the Jewish people whom it has been proven lived there thousands of years before the Palestinians received the nomenclature that has made this fight possible.

Mr. Carter is afraid of the backlash his book has brought against him, thinking it may taint his place in 'history', yet fails to realize that he can't possibly taint a legacy that includes his presidency. Mr. Carter is quite possibly (with exception to murderous despots such as Hussein, Stalin, Hitler, et. al.) the worst leader of any civilized nation in the history of man.

    Earmarks
Seems the President and Congress both want to do something about earmarks getting inserted into bills they vote on (and sign). You would think if the people that propose earmarks (congress) and the guy that signs the bills (W) both want to change it, it would be easy.

Yet in all the years that people have wanted to stop the earmark process (publicly) they haven't been able to figure it out yet. The simplest solution would be a line-item veto. The President would then have the authority to pass a bill, yet veto parts out. This would have to be tweaked so as parts of a bill couldn't be vetoed out instead of simply vetoing earmarks, but with the political minds on capitol hill [hehTM] it should be easy.

I truly hope the Democratic (incoming) Congress is serious about eliminating the 'pork' projects from bills, history says they are not, but history doesn't rule today. If nothing else came of this 'revolution' by the voters, at least something good would come out of it.

    Politics

Bush Seeks to Halt Congress Pet Projects
37 mins ago Bush Seeks to Halt Congress Pet Projects
WASHINGTON - President Bush said Saturday that his administration will outline a series of changes that would clamp down on the common Capitol Hill practice of slipping pet projects into spending bills.

These projects, called earmarks, are spending provisions that often are put into bills at the last minute, so they never get debated or discussed, Bush said in his weekly radio address.

"It is not surprising that this often leads to unnecessary federal spending, such as a swimming pool or a teapot museum tucked into a big spending bill," he said.

The president said his administration's proposal would make earmarks more transparent, make lawmakers more accountable for the earmarks they propose, and help reduce the overall number of earmarks. (link)

After reading the article, it seems maybe the congressmen quoted are more interested in playing politics than joining the President's proposal. But if the politics get to the same ends, maybe it will be ok.

Posted by: McQ on Friday, December 15, 2006

The Goldwater Institute just did a very interesting study (pdf) concerning poverty, taxes and government spending. It's conclusions seem to validate classical liberal economic theory concerning the best way to address poverty.

It measured overall poverty and childhood poverty in all 50 states and any reduction or gains within those two categories when compared to the national average between 1990 and 2000. Their findings:

    By MARY CLARE JALONICK
    Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Tim Johnson was experiencing post-surgery swelling in his brain Friday, but his doctors said his recovery was still encouraging. They said he would remain hospitalized until the swelling went down.

The South Dakota Democrat, who suffered a brain hemorrhage Wednesday, remained in critical but stable condition Friday, just short of three weeks before the new Senate is to convene with his party holding control by a single vote.

    AP Photo/CHARLES DHARAPAK
The timing of his return is uncertain, but Democrats would still be in control of the Senate if his recovery period extends into the new session.

The surgery has been described as successful, relieving pressure on the 59-year-old senator's brain and stopping the bleeding.

"Considering his initial presentation, his progress is encouraging," Dr. Anthony Caputy, chairman of the George Washington University Hospital department of neurosurgery, said in a statement released by Johnson's office.(link)
Good news from the watch on Johnson, everyone is still praying for his recovery (even if they people are speculating on political matters) and praying for his family in this trying time.

Medical marvel? or just a liberal?

Man with no pulse considered a medical breakthrough

    Canadian Press

MONTREAL — A 65-year-old Quebec man who received a new long-term mechanical heart last month is being described as the only living Canadian without a pulse.

Dr. Renzo Cecere implanted the “Heartmate II” mechanical heart into Gerard Langevin in an three-hour operation Nov. 23.

Officials at the McGill University Health Centre say the device, which is about the size of a flashlight battery, could last up to 10 years.

That is longer than other models which are thought to be good for only two or three years.

The new mechanical heart, which is powered by batteries located in pouches on Mr. Langevin's body, provides a continuous flow of blood so the patient has no pulse.

“Mr. Langevin happens to be the only individual currently living in Canada without a pulse and without a measurable blood pressure,” Dr. Cecere said Wednesday.

Mr. Langevin admitted to reporters that, before the operation, he felt his time was up after he suffered his second heart attack in July.

He had the other in 2002.

“I was finished. I had no time left. I probably had only a few months left to live,” Mr. Langevin said.(link)

Ok so it was a lame joke, but this really looks cool. Imagine going for a physical and not telling the nurse about it :)

The Death Penalty & the 'Village' (idiot)
Seems the officials in Florida executed a man ... wrong o.O
Official Says Fla. Execution Was Botched
OCALA, Fla. - The execution of a convicted killer took 34 minutes - twice as long as normal - because officials botched the insertion of the needles that delivered the lethal chemicals, a medical examiner said Friday.

Dr. William Hamilton, who performed the autopsy, said the needles pierced Angel Nieves Diaz's veins and then went into soft tissue in his arms. The lethal chemicals are supposed to go directly into the veins.

Hamilton refused to say whether he thought Diaz died a painful death. (link)
One of the things wrong with the death penalty is the fact that after a society has decided that it is acceptable to make someone pay the ultimate price for their crimes, we still worry that they may have a moment of pain before they die. Considering people aren't executed for political dissent (or even treason now-a-days), these people have taken someone's life. Usually without any regard to feelings of pain or personal sacrifice. They made the decision to take a life and are paying for it according to our laws. If they feel any pain at all, it is a fast and fleeting pain, usually not the same as their victims or the life-long pain of the victims families and (I feel) justifiable to carry out the sentence.

If you must execute someone, worry more about the end result and not so much the 'pain' they may or may not suffer.

    Kofi whines, people still die

Annan 'very sad' he couldn't resolve ME conflict

Outgoing United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed great sadness on Friday that he couldn't help resolve the Israel-Palestinian conflict during his term of office.

"It is with great personal sadness that I leave office with the (Israeli) occupation now in its 40th year," he said in a message to a UN-backed conference on Palestine on Friday.

Annan called on all parties involved in the conflict as well as the international community to redouble their efforts to put the Middle East peace process back on track. (link)

Poor Kofi. One of the reasons might be the way he describes the situation "...I leave office with the (Israeli) occupation...". This type of rhetoric might actually be harmful to the peace process as it indicates that you have already taken sides and aren't interested in a 'fair' deal.

Of course, this is the same idiot that allowed Dafur to rage on his watch, took part in the oil-for-food scandal and cashed in to the tune of millions of dollars in pension. Sad isn't something I expect Kofi to feel more than a week out. After that, he'll feel like any other criminal who got away with it. Of all the people in the world, this one man probably set back the poor and disenfranchised the most in history.

So forgive me if I have no pity for Kofi and his sadness, if he wants real sadness, he should take a trip to some of the places that his U.N. tried to 'save'.

I got accepted to PayPerPost today and am already assured of $4.00 (woot). Blah Blah Blog got me onto this promotion awhile back (I was rejected as too new, but now I'm old enough [heh]) and I thought I would write about it.

Basically you sign up at their website, then after the approval process, they will allow you to take 'pay' opportunities. These opportunities come from businesses and websites that want to generate buzz about themselves or their products. Some ads must be positive, while others can be positive or negative.

Basically you have to write a post of X words about the product/website and then hope they approve it. If they do, then you get paid. I'm looking forward to making a little side money with this blog :) and PayPerPost seemed like a good way to do it. I will try not to promote anything that disagrees with my viewpoint of the world in general (I will visit the websites and if possible actually try out any products I review). I'm not entirely sure how many of these I will do (most are agreeable with my platform, style or whatever) but I'll categorize all of them as paid to posts so anyone looking for them will know where they are.

All the bloggers that come here, I would recommend this to you also. It's a good way to make a little extra cash doing what you already do, blogging.

Also, I would like to thank all the people that have stopped by and commented (or just looked) and ask you guys to give me (and Thai) any suggestions to what you would want to see. Content or how the site itself can be better (also any errors you see [thanks GoodRichard] and feel need corrected).

    Battle of Midway, 4-7 June 1942 --
    Overview and Special Image Selection

The Battle of Midway, fought over and near the tiny U.S. mid-Pacific base at Midway atoll, represents the strategic high water mark of Japan's Pacific Ocean war. Prior to this action, Japan possessed general naval superiority over the United States and could usually choose where and when to attack. After Midway, the two opposing fleets were essentially equals, and the United States soon took the offensive.

Japanese Combined Fleet commander Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto moved on Midway in an effort to draw out and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet's aircraft carrier striking forces, which had embarassed the Japanese Navy in the mid-April Doolittle Raid on Japan's home islands and at the Battle of Coral Sea in early May. He planned to quickly knock down Midway's defenses, follow up with an invasion of the atoll's two small islands and establish a Japanese air base there. He expected the U.S. carriers to come out and fight, but to arrive too late to save Midway and in insufficient strength to avoid defeat by his own well-tested carrier air power.

Yamamoto's intended surprise was thwarted by superior American communications intelligence, which deduced his scheme well before battle was joined. This allowed Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the U.S. Pacific Fleet commander, to establish an ambush by having his carriers ready and waiting for the Japanese. On 4 June 1942, in the second of the Pacific War's great carrier battles, the trap was sprung. The perserverance, sacrifice and skill of U.S. Navy aviators, plus a great deal of good luck on the American side, cost Japan four irreplaceable fleet carriers, while only one of the three U.S. carriers present was lost. The base at Midway, though damaged by Japanese air attack, remained operational and later became a vital component in the American trans-Pacific offensive.

I'm currently watching The Battle of Midway from the National Geographic archives. Some war footage, but mostly to do with salvage of sunken ships around the Midway war zone.

This movie/documentary isn't what I was looking for, but it is a good watch. The mix of documentary and 'today' scavenging operations is pretty good and informative. Most of the film is in color (colorized) and the voice-over is well done.

Since this is a week for remembering the great war (Pear Harbor), I thought I would post on what I'm watching now. I have D-day and Pearl Harbor left to watch.

Johnson Update / Miss America / Rafah / UN
Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) is recovering after surgery. Lots of people talking about this. DKos, The News-Press, the Examiner, WashingtonMonthly, the WSJ, Michelle Malkin (with video from the ViewTM talking conspiracy), InstaPundit (with a link to PajamasMedia), WaPo, PowerLine, Captain's Quarters, TNR and JS over at Observations.

As you can see, people from both sides of the aisle and even those on the fence are writing about the Senator. Some people do indeed write about the outcome if he doesn't get better, but on the most part it's all about support. Everyone continue to pray for Mr. Johnson and his family.
TMZ reports on the Miss America situation:

    Miss USA Dethroned?

Miss USATMZ has learned that officials from the Miss USA pageant will make a "major announcement" today and may strip reigning Miss USA Tara Conner of her title due to inappropriate behavior.

Sources tell TMZ that executives from the Miss USA organization and NBC (which broadcasts the pageant) met Tuesday to discuss Conner and alleged incidents of her inappropriate behavior, including her conduct at New York City bars. While no one from the pageant would comment on the rumored troubles, several sources tell TMZ that a big announcement is expected some time Thursday. According to these sources, officials are extremely unhappy with the current Miss USA's conduct in public. (link)

Later in the article they have updates where 'the Don' states that Miss America is not being dethroned and they will work with her to fix her behavioral situations. This would be the 2nd Miss America dethroned that I can remember, so slightly big news (if you follow M.A. at all).
    Meanwhile in Rafah:

18 wounded as Hamas, Fatah, Egyptians clash at Rafah

    Talkbacks for this article: 32

Eighteen people were wounded on Thursday night in renewed clashes at the Rafah border crossing, hours after Hamas gunmen tried to seize control of the terminal, on the Egypt-Gaza border.

Witnesses said Hamas gunmen were firing at the Egyptian side of the border, drawing return fire from the Egyptians and presidential guards from Fatah.

During the battle, masked gunmen in three cars and a bulldozer stormed the terminal, witnesses said. The gunmen went on a rampage inside the building, destroying computers and furniture inside and plunging the area into darkness, the witnesses said.

The U.N. gets a new chief:

New U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon vows to restore trust

    Thu Dec 14, 2006 3:17pm ET

    By Irwin Arieff

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - South Korea's Ban Ki-moon was sworn in as the eighth U.N. secretary-general on Thursday and vowed to restore trust in an institution tainted by scandal and a growing divide between rich and poor nations.

The former South Korean foreign minister, 62, takes over on January 1, succeeding Ghanaian Kofi Annan, 68, who steps down at the end of the month after 10 years as U.N. leader.

"You could say that I am a man on a mission. And my mission could be dubbed 'Operation Restore Trust': Trust in the organization and trust between member-states and the secretariat," Ban said. (link)

Let's all hope he is much better than Kofi was at EVERYTHING. The U.N. is at the point where the easiest way to save it would be to dismantle the apparatus and start over. It couldn't be any worse than the things that go on there now. While the U.N. spent years condemning Israel in the M.E. and the U.S. for not saving the world, they let the tragedy in Dafur rage, they stole money from various countries/people (oil-for-food) and they continue to allow their 'peace' workers to rape young women all over the world.

There is not much that can be said that is good about the U.N. so I won't even try.

Prayers go out to Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD)
Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S. D., has been hospitalized with symptoms described as stroke-like. The seriousness of his illness has not been disclosed. ...

Johnson became disoriented during a call with reporters at midday, stuttering in response to a question. He appeared to recover, asking if there were any additional questions before ending the call.

Johnson spokeswoman Julianne Fisher said he had walked back to his Capitol office after the call with reporters but appeared to not be feeling well. The Capitol physician was called and Johnson was taken by ambulance to the George Washington Univeristy Hospital in D.C. for evaluation.

A statement released by Johnson's office said, "Senator Tim Johnson was taken to George Washington University Hospital this afternoon suffering from a possible stroke. As this stage, he is undergoing a comprehensive evaluation by the stroke team. Further details will be forthcoming when more is known."

The Most Beautiful Women in Hollywood !!!
Ok - I'm gonna go a bit off the reservation and produce my list of the 5 most beautiful women in Hollywood.

1.) Thandie Newton (multiple roles - was in Crash, MI-2 and on ER for a season)

    http://www.celebritywonder.com

2.) Kristen Kreuk (Lana Lang on Smallville, played in Snow White and EarthSea)

    http://www.kristinkreuk.net

3.) Grace Park (Boomer on BattleStar Galactica)

    http://www.graceparknews.com/photos.html

4.) An actress to be named later (leaning toward Catherine Bell with short hair - I don't like her long hair)

5.) An actress to be named later (not sure who I'm leaning towards)

You'll notice that #4 and #5 are empty. Thats because there are always two revolving seats on my list (kinda like the U.N. Security Council but much hotter)

You'll also notice that these permanent ones are "Women of Color". That is mostly preference I guess. My wife is of Thai descent so I'm attracted to Asian women (so naturally Grace and Kristen make the list). Black women are also attractive to me as well (so hence Thandie Newton).

The women I choose for my list are not just for their looks but also for how they comport themselves as ladies in the public eye. So please spare me any condescending comments on me being "horny" or anything like that. I just would like to keep a running tab on who I find to be the most beautiful women on screen.

One note here -> my wife is THE most beautiful woman on the planet IMHO. But she is not a current Hollywood star and noone would know her if I put her pic up (which I will not do - sorry guys). So she doesn't go on this list. Now if she were to dust off her SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) card - she did national TV commercials as a child - and do movies or TV shows now, she'd go to the top of my list !!!

So in a subsequent post I'll round out the list. Once I've done that, please post yours !!!

    The Flying Jihadis !!!
Ok - I need to apologize in advance for not making "pretty" posts like Nazh. I will learn how to do so in the future and eventually will be as good as he is on this site.

So for my second post on LordNazh I thought I'd speak to the recent problem with the 6 imams getting thrown off the flight. You all know about this as it was in the news recently but I thought I'd weigh in on it.

Here are my thoughts on the subject !!!

BRAVO TO USAIRWAYS FOR PUTTING PASSENGER SAFETY FIRST !!!

SHAME ON THE IMAMS AND ANYONE WHO DEFENDS THEM !!!

    Here's why...

These 6 imams staged this entire event.

    Here are the facts as we know them so far;

1.) The imams prayed in a public area of the airport and very loudly. (not illegal in and of itself - but such behavior can be disconcerting to passengers)

2.) The imams were heard (by a muslim passenger) making loud, disparaging remarks about Iraq and Bush (again, not illegal, but add this behavior to #1 and the "pucker factor" rises up a notch)

3.) The imams moved to the exit rows as well as the front and the back of the plane. (This is the exact behavior consistent with the 9/11 attacks.)

4.) Three of the six passengers had 1-way tickets and checked no bags (again - consistent with 9/11)

5.) Some imams requested seatbelt extensions when they clearly didn't need them.( Such extensions, with heavy metal ends, can be used as weapons)

6.) The seatbelt extensions were placed on the floor in front of them. (Why request the extensions if you're not going to use them?)

    Check it out at;

    http://richardminiter.pajamasmedia.com/2006/12/01/exclusive_police_report_passen.php

    My thoughts...

Look I'm a nervous flyer and I always pray before takeoff and landing. Why? Because statistics show thats when things are most likely to go wrong. I have no problem with people praying - but please do it so it doesn't make others uncomfortable. These muslims could've waited to do their prayers after they landed. Subsequently their behavior warranted their removal from the flight. These muslims were deliberately provoking a security response which would entail them getting kicked off the flight. They knew what they were doing and knew what would happen as a result.

Why did they do this? Well, from my point of view this was designed to fabricate a controversy so that more regulation could get passed so that pilots in the future would have to weigh their careers vs passenger safety. One more step along the way to make it easier to attack the U.S. in the future.

Remember, you get hit when you lower your guard. Never let your guard down !!!

Sorry this post is short but I want to open this up for any comments in case someone thinks me bonkers.

    Lohan / Democrats/Terrorists/
Lohan Says She's Attending AA Meetings

NEW YORK (AP) -- Lindsay Lohan says she's been going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for a year, but hasn't talked about it because "it's no one's business."

"I just left an AA meeting," the 20-year-old actress tells People magazine in a story posted Tuesday on its Web site.

"I haven't had a drink in seven days. Or anything," she says. "I'm not even legal to, so why would I? I don't drink when I go to clubs. I drink with my friends at home, but there's no need to. I feel better not drinking. It's more fun. I have Red Bull."

    AP Photo/MARK J. TERRILL

"I've been going to AA for a year by the way," Lohan adds. When asked why didn't she say so until recently, she replies: "Well it's no one's business. That's why it's anonymous!"

Her publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnik, didn't immediately respond Tuesday to a message from The Associated Press seeking comment. (link)

I understand all the 'jumping' on going on with Lindsay (if you haven't seen her emails, then read them), but the fact that she's in AA shouldn't make the news at all. There's a real good reason it's called Alcoholics Anonymous. The whole program is based on being able to square up to your addiction without the judgemental side-effects of being 'public'.
Dems to Wipe Out Pet Projects in Bills
    Dec 11 8:08 PM US/Eastern

    WASHINGTON

Democrats tidying up a cluster of unfinished spending bills dumped on them by departing Republican leaders in Congress will start by removing billions of dollars in lawmakers' pet projects next month.

The move, orchestrated by the incoming chairmen of the House and Senate Appropriations committees, could prove politically savvy even as it proves unpopular with other members of Congress, who as a group will lose thousands of so-called earmarks.

"There will be no congressional earmarks," Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., and Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., said Monday in a statement announcing their plans, which were quickly endorsed by incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D- Nev. (via AP wire, no link)

Great news for all Americans if the Dems go through with this. Pork is what kills almost every Congress. The amount of money going out to pet projects would dumbfound most Americans and one of the biggest reasons the Republicans got the boot was because of Pork! (and immigration, but dems don't look promising there)
    Muslim Charity Wants Charges Dismissed

DALLAS (AP) -- A Muslim charity accused of ties to terrorists has asked a federal judge to dismiss many of the charges the U.S. government filed against it after the 2001 terror attacks.

Lawyers for the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development based the request on a ruling last month by a federal judge in Los Angeles, who struck down President Bush's authority to designate groups as terrorists.

Holy Land's lawyers argued in their motion, filed Monday in federal district court in Dallas, that a similar order by President Clinton, banning transactions with the militant group Hamas, was also unconstitutional.(link)

An organization knowingly giving money to terrorists using the judicial system to try to get charges dropped because a liberal judge decided that the President of the U.S. can't determine which organizations are terrorists or not... who'd thunk it? (note: there is great hope that the ruling will be overturned and the leader of the free world will again get to decide that Hamas is a terrorist organization)

clashes with Palestinian gunmen in the West Bank town of Kabatiya, south of Jenin. The soldier was evacuated by helicopter to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa and was treated for a gunshot wound to the forehead.

The soldier was wounded during a routine arrest raid in the West Bank town. An armed Palestinian opened fire at the military force and hit the soldier. Another soldier was lightly wounded during the gun clashes. (link)

Another clash in the West Bank while a 'cease-fire' holds in Gaza. It will take both the Israelis and the Palestinians to make peace if they ever do. You would think the first step should be for the Palestinians to stop ambushing the IDF. Sadly, that doesn't look like a scenario that will ever come to pass.

At least the two soldiers that were hit seem to be ok. Wounded, but not in any serious danger at this time.

    Shark Attack in Perth

Shark bites teen's leg off in Australia

Sat Dec 2, 7:01 PM ET

PERTH, Australia - A shark ripped off part of a 15-year-old tourist's leg on Saturday as he swam at a beach in Australia's remote southwest, officials said.

Zak Golebiowski, from South Australia state, was attacked as he bodysurfed with a brother and a friend about 40 yards offshore at Wharton Beach, said police Constable Katrina Luke.

The teen's right leg was severed above the knee and his left leg badly mauled, but family members and witnesses on the beach managed to stem the bleeding until an ambulance arrived, Luke said.(link)

According to the report, roughly 15 attacks happen each year in Australian waters (highest in the world). Fifteen sounds like a low number to me, but I guess if you are one of the 15, then it's at least one too many.

I thought I'd post this for my Perthian reader in case he/she hadn't heard the news yet.

    The Road to Fallujah
Route Mobile is a modern 6-lane highway that connects Anbar province to Baghdad. It runs past Ramadi, Falluja, and many smaller towns along its path. The infamous Abu Gahraib detention facility lies on Mobile, just past Falluja. The stretch of road between Ramadi and Falluja is bland, the road gently curving north and south. The concrete is pockmarked here and there with past IED explosions, and every so often the remains of a destroyed vehicle are scattered across the desert landscape. This is the road I often take on my way from Ramadi to Falluja, and back again. My permanent home is still in Ramadi, capital of the Anbar province, but lately I've spent a lot of time patroling the streets of Falluja and along the canals of the surrounding farmland. The city bears clear witness to the terrific battle fought here two years ago between the worst of the Anbar insurgency and the gathered soldiers and Marines. Shell and bullet holes scar the walls, and there is still rubble in the streets. However, unlike Ramadi, Falluja seems to be a fairly functional city now. The streets crowd with people, shops are open for business, and new construction dots the landscape in stark contrast to the desolate war zone that defines Ramadi.(link)

By IBRAHIM BARZAK, Associated Press Writer
    2 hours, 4 minutes ago

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Palestinian gunmen killed three young sons of a senior Palestinian intelligence officer Monday, pumping dozens of bullets into their car as it passed through a street crowded with schoolchildren in an apparent botched assassination attempt that could ignite widespread factional fighting.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the drive-by attack, which left the schoolbags and a small plastic bag with a sandwich covered in blood.

"I have no words. Words stop at the extent of this crime," the boys' father, Baha Balousheh, told The Associated Press. "I am a father who has lost his children."

This is as bad as sending a suicide bomber into a civilian population center. To deliberately target three young boys like that and gun them down is beyond reproach. Luckily if they find those responsible, the court system is a bit rougher than ours, so justice may yet be done.

Syria moves missiles closer to Israel
By HERB KEINON AND JPOST STAFF
The cabinet at its weekly meeting heard a dismal assessment of the regional situation, as Brig.-Gen. Yossi Baidatz informed the government that Syria, concerned by the possibility of an Israeli attack, has stepped up its production of long-range missiles and moved anti-aircraft missiles to the front with Israel.
Syrian President Bashar Assad watches a training exercise through binoculars by one of the Syrian army's divisions in an undisclosed location in Syria, Monday, May 29.
    Photo: AP
"Everywhere you look, the extremists are on the rise, while those who want to bring about a new order in the Middle East are on the decline," Baidatz said, proceeding to paint a situation in the Gaza Strip in which Hamas was taking advantage of the cease-fire to strengthen itself and its military capabilities.

While for the most part, Baidatz said, the cease-fire has held, there have been 17 rocket attacks on southern Israel from Gaza.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, center, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz, left, and Cabinet Secretary Yisrael Maimon, right, are seen during the weekly cabinet meeting in Olemrt's office in Jerusalem, Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006.

I hope no one is suprised that Syria is moving it's missles and anti-missle units closer to Israel. They must not think that the US and Israel will follow the ISG recommendations on Surrender by both parties.

Syria is just a bad event waiting to happen and hopefully the next time they get out of line, Israel will have someone in charge with the gall to do something about it. Why don't we give Syria to the Palestinians so they can have a state :)

France deploys UAVs to stop IAF flights
    By YAAKOV KATZ
In an effort to put a stop to Israeli overflights in Lebanon, the French Armed Forces has deployed an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) squadron in southern Lebanon to conduct intelligence-gathering missions in place of the IDF.

France, a member of UNIFIL, has expressed adamant opposition to IAF overflights in Lebanon. Last month, OC Planning Division Maj.-Gen. Ido Nehushtan traveled to Paris for meetings with senior military officials during which he tried to explain Israel's operational needs. The flights, the IDF claims, are necessary for gathering intelligence and keeping an eye on the Lebanese-Syrian border through which weapons are smuggled to the Hizbullah.
Notice the Fwench aren't deploying the UAV's for fear of Hizbullah rearming, they are doing it to stop the EVILTM Zionists from flying over Lebanon. France (and the UN) don't care if Hizbullah EVER disarms, all they care about is the prestige of being 'in-charge' of Lebanon and thwarting Israel. They've almost picked a fight with Israel twice so far. Heck we could give France to the Palestinians if this keeps up. [heh]

Ding dong the witch is dead...
Pinochet, the brutal dictator who took over Chile and killed thousands of his opponents is dead. At least there is some good news in the world.

Augusto Pinochet, 91, Ex-Dictator of Chile, Dies
    By JONATHAN KANDELL
    Published: December 10, 2006

Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, the brutal dictator who repressed and reshaped Chile for nearly two decades and became a notorious symbol of human rights abuse and corruption, died today at the Military Hospital of Santiago. He was 91.

The man evaded charges for more than a decade due to his 'poor health'. I will never understand why poor health will stop anyone from paying for their crimes. It is a sign of respect to the villian when you can't judge them because they aren't feeling well and a disgrace to the victims of this diabolical terror. People on both sides of the political aisle agree that this man should have been brought to justice, and are glad that he is in the hands of the final justice now.

The people of Chile have a curse lifted from their heads and are now free to move on without the wicked ole witch hanging over them any longer.

Shuttle Blasts Off in Rare Night Launch

    Dec 9, 10:39 PM (ET)

(AP) Space Shuttle Discovery lifts off from launch pad 39B with a crew of seven at the Kennedy Space...
    Full Image

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - Discovery lit up the sky late Saturday, blazing off for the first nighttime space shuttle launch in four years - the latest step in NASA's ambitious schedule to complete the international space station.

The shuttle's fiery ascent turned night into day for spectators at the Kennedy Space Center. A cloudy sky with blustery winds earlier in the day gave way to clear skies and a gentle breeze at launch time.

"I think we have five people who just haven't stopped smiling yet," commander Mark Polansky said after Discovery reached space.

The mission is one leg of a three-year race to finish construction on the orbiting outpost before shuttles are retired in 2010. After Discovery's mission, 13 more shuttle flights are needed to complete the space lab.

I didn't get to see this lift-off but I'm glad to see the shuttle back in space. I'm kinda psyched about the moon base, I always thought they should actually do something with the moon instead of just visiting it.

Now, just how long will it be before we put a man on Mars?

If not for Vandals, Kim might not have died
The story from Fox News is that if vandals hadn't broken the lock on the gate to the little one lane road the Kims used, they would probably not have gotten stranded. The person(s) that did this deserve to be brought to trial for the contributing circumstances of their actions [if caught].

Kim Family Took Deadly Wrong Turn Because Vandals Cut Lock on Oregon Road's Gate
    Friday, December 08, 2006
GRANTS PASS, Ore. — James Kim likely would never have made what turned out to be a deadly wrong turn, had vandals not cut the lock of a gate blocking off a remote logging road in the Oregon wilderness, authorities said Friday.

The road that Kim and his family drove down before getting stranded deep in the Rogue River Canyon is normally blocked by a locked metal gate, but it was open the night they got lost because a vandal had cut the lock, authorities said Friday.

This is a sad turn to the story. Now we know that it wasn't just a wrong turn that doomed Mr. Kim, but a vandal and a broken lock that led him down that path. Granted, there is no way to know if the Kims would have gotten stuck somewhere else along the road they were traveling (since they had gotten lost), it seems that the (alleged) deliberate removal of the lock is the central reason the family was stuck. I feel very bad for the family and friends, and I would imagine that somewhere out there a person is feeling worse than me realizing they caused this.

Coaching III / Death of a Giant
Seems that Rich Rodriguez has changed his mind once again and turned down the Alabama offer and decided to stay at West Virginia. Seems WVU ponied up some more money and years and Rich decided he really liked it there. (Alabama was offering $2mil a year for 6 years)

Rodriguez denies 'Bama, will return to Morgantown

    Associated Press
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez turned down Alabama on Friday, telling his players that he'll be back for his sixth season with the Mountaineers.
A loud applause could be heard from inside the Milan Puskar Center at Mountaineer Field after Rodriguez told his team he would be staying at his alma mater.

"Obviously I'm very excited to stay here and I plan on being here a long time," Rodriguez said later at a news conference. "We've done some pretty good things over the last five years or so. We're not done yet. We're going to continue to grow."
    Rodriguez head coaching career
    Rich Rodriguez
    Rodriguez
Rich Rodriguez has guided West Virginia to three Big East championships and four straight New Year's Day Bowl games, including the 2007 Toyota Gator Bowl vs. Georgia Tech.

    COACHING RECORD:
    With West Virginia: 49-24 (2001-present)
    With Glenville State (Div. II):
    With Salem (Div. II): 2-8 (1988) 43-26-2 (1990-96)

Rodriguez will receive a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season from West Virginia. Other details of the deal were not immediately released.

"There weren't many reasons not to go. It's all about the reasons for staying," Rodriguez said. "I'm biased, this is my school. I think it's a great place to raise a family. We've always had a great athletic tradition."

Seems like Alabama is still searching for a coach. I still think they should go after Norm Chow, especially since NC State already got a coach.

ESPN reports that Jose Uribe (ex-SF Giants shortstop) died when his SUV crashed. Jose wasJose Uribe from the Dominican Republic and is survived by his wife, Wendy Guerrero, and at least 14 children.

Jose was 47 years old. Rest in Peace.

    Raids in Iraq
The A(w/t)P reports that coalition forces have raided an Al-Qaeda stronghold. Read the article and you'll see that the forces were searching through buildings and were attacked, they then returned fire. This doesn't sound like a 'raid' to me, but a defense.
Coalition raids Iraq areas, killing 20

    1 hour, 33 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S.-led coalition forces killed 20 insurgents, including two women, Friday in fighting and air strikes that targeted al-Qaida in Iraq militants northwest of Baghdad, the military said. The mayor of the area said 19 civilians were killed, including seven women and eight children.
AFP/USMC/File Photo: US Marines attach a howitzer to a helicopter for transportation to western Iraq in November...Under continuing fire, the troops called in air support, killing 18 insurgents, including two women, the command said in a brief statement. The military declined to specify which branch of the coalition was involved, but the U.S. provides the bulk of the air support in most of the country.

"Al-Qaida in Iraq has both men and women supporting and facilitating their operations unfortunately," it said.

    American Despotism
Unalienable Rights Blog has a great 3 part series on the American Despot. Part I here, Part II here, Part III is to come. Some excerpts from the posts:
Power is a drug addiction of epic proportions in our government. We know that these same people will not surrender the power they have accumulated to themselves. We can conclude that these same lusty people will not remove the violations of our freedoms. The operative word both major parties are heard saying in regard to their electoral prospects is control. Both want control. That is the battle cry of both - control.
An excellent read, the 1st part deals with the Bill of Rights and the first 4 amendments mainly (amendments 10 through 14). Using simple language and historical quotes from our founding fathers it sets the stage for the tone of the whole post.

The main body of the Constitution defines the form of the federal government. The Bill of Rights explicitly identifies those activities of people which the federal government is forbidden to act upon. And just to make sure that the federal government knew its limits, the whole is capped off with the tenth amendment which reserves anything not directly apportioned to the federal government to remain within the purview of the States and the People.
Part 2 continues the theme and gets into the 14th amendment more completely and touches upon the 16th amendment (taxation) also. The entire two posts (with one to go) are excellently written and good reading. They are informative and provocative, enough to make you think out loud on the state of this Union. Click thru and read the posts, then read the whole blog (or what you are able). This is truly a 'thought' blog worth the time and energy spent perusing it.

According to the website no deal has been made yet. But the report on Sportscenter was after the report was posted on ESPN.com so no clue here. If he's signed, then good news to the Crimson Tide fans out there. With apologies to MK and a h/t to Townhall, I'm stealing this tribute:

The best place to hear about it is from survivors, and you can see many of their stories on You Tube, many of them interviewed with the very scene of the attack as abackdrop, now all peace and sunshine and palm trees. I went to PearlHarbor in 2005. It being Hawaii, the place was absolutely gorgeous.

It struck me that the servicemen there in December of 1941 probablyhadn't been too displeased with their orders when they ended up servingin a 70-degree paradise in wintertime. Hawaii was less developed then,of course, but still beautiful, dotted with enough naturalattractions to keep anyone spellbound. Perhaps they were consideringtheir good fortune as they strode the decks of the Arizona thatmorning. Maybe they were looking out into the breezy blue and countingthemselves lucky to in paradise instead of Pennsylvania.

Then, blue skies clouded with Japanese bombers, calm waters caughton fire, and those young men became fighters and casualties in a warthey didn't even know had started.

Follow the link and read the rest of it, it is a great tribute. It has been 65 years since the devastating attack on our forces at Pearl Harbor started the great American war machine churning and precipitated our entry into WWII. What was accomplished then will never be forgotten.

Thanks to the Americans of that era, the people of today feel free to bash their President, military and countrymen with aplomb. Thanks to those brave and tireless fighters and the working people that stayed behind, Europe is free to bash America and promote terrorism vis-a-vis anti-american policies of appeasement and defeatism.

Thanks to that war and the outcome, the Jewish people regained their homeland. They've been fighting for it every since with little help from the world that was on the brink of a German Suzerienty. As long as free people continue to forget why they are free, the world will be a dark and dangerous place.

    Water on Mars
Everyone who's anyone is talking about this, so I thought I would make a post (seems my connection is bad, so this post will be published 12/7 after work):

Does water STILL flow on Mars?
By JULIE WHELDON, Science Correspondent Last updated at 17:55pm on 6th December 2006
Striking new images of the Red Planet have raised hopes life could be found on Mars after all.

Scientists say they have photographic evidence that suggests liquid water may have been on the planet as little as five years ago.

Does water still flow on Mars? These dramatic new photos seem to indicate yes

Experts last night said Mars now appears more active than previously thought and the latest study shows why it is vital to continue to search for life on our planetary neighbour.

The first images of Mars' surface were taken in the 1960s and they suggested it was a dusty, cratered world rather like our Moon.
Now a new set of photographs has suggested that liquid water may have flowed on the planet a mere five years ago.

The discovery resulted from images taken by the Mars Global Surveyor which first recorded gullies and trenches that could have been made by fast-flowing water coursing down cliffs and crater walls.(link)

All of this will continue to be speculation until/unless we can actually get ahold of some water from Mars. When man walks on Mars (with the ability to do more research than the limited probes we have there now), then we'll find out if there is water (and possibly life).

    Syria wants Peace
    Dec. 5, 2006 22:39 | Updated Dec. 6, 2006 7:51
Syrian reps tell Kadima MKs in Amman they want peace
    By GIL HOFFMAN
Negotiations on a peace agreement between Israel and Syria should start immediately, for the benefit of both peoples, Syrian legislators told Kadima MKs Majallie Whbee and Amira Dotan in Jordan on Sunday.

The Kadima lawmakers were attending a forum of parliamentarians from several Middle Eastern countries, including Syria, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia and Algeria that was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Whbee said there was a consensus among representatives from all the countries to return to the negotiating table and end violence and terror.(link)
Syria's visiting Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, second left, and Iraq's Foreign Affairs Minister Hoshyar Zebari, second right, arrive for a media conference in Baghdad Tuesday.
    Photo: AP

It's too bad that the Syrian delegation has no authority (Syria is run exclusively by the President and his Baath party). It sounds like they are truly ready for peace. Of course, Israel would have to be careful as the middle eastern countries have talked peace before and there is still not peace in the middle east.

Israel must look for any means to establish peace simply because the 'international' world will not allow it the one way to guarantee peace. Militarily, Israel could and has defeated all of its enemies (hard to call the Hizbollah/Israel war a win/loss for anyone; militarily Israel big, publicly; Hiz) and will continue to do so. The international community should be putting pressure on the other countries and regimes of the middle east to secure peace, instead of stepping on Israels hands every time an arab stubs his toe.

    Peace in the M.E.
Here's the suprise news of the day:

Palestinian unity government won't bring peace: Peres

    Wed Dec 6, 2006 3:34am ET

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres said on Wednesday a Palestinian unity government would be a facade aimed at easing Western economic sanctions rather than a new framework for seeking peace with Israel.

"Hamas doesn't want peace, even if we give them 1967 borders," Peres told Israel Radio, referring to the governing Islamist group and the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, territory Israel captured in a war that year.

Peres said Hamas, which advocates Israel's destruction, would effectively be at the helm of a unity government of non-political technocrats it has been trying to form with moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction.

"Hamas wants to use Fatah as a cover, a facade, so they can get money," Peres said.(link)
At least someone in office in Israel has figured out that Hamas DOES NOT WANT peace. Unless of course you count the piece that comes with all the Israelis dead. [heh]

Maybe one day there will be peace in the middle east, but I rather doubt it.

    Israel / Iran
    From :
Report: Israel, Iran holding debt talks
By Matti Friedman, Associated Press Writer | December 5, 2006

JERUSALEM --While Iran continues to deny that Israel has the right to exist, representatives of the two countries are holding clandestine talks in Europe to settle an old Israeli debt, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Iran is still owed hundreds of millions of dollars for oil it supplied to Israel in the years before the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the two countries, now sworn enemies, are holding contacts meant to settle the debt, according to the report in the daily Haaretz citing anonymous Israeli and Swiss officials involved in the negotiations.(link)
Easy problem here I think. Israel owes Iran lots of money due to the fact that the two countries worked together for so long before the mullahs took over in '79. Iran needs money to work on their nuclear ambitions and to try and wipe Israel off the map. Should Israel pay up? Giving the length of time involved, it would be hard to get someone in this country to have to pay you after 27-odd years. But on a more personal level, is it in Israel's best (national) interests to pay the regime that wants (the most) to destroy them?

If it were me and I had a say in the matter, I'd tell them to take a hike, unless they were bringing some serious negotiations to the table. Given Iran's track record with the truth, and the U.N.'s track record with holding countries to the truth, even that probably wouldn't be enough.

It shows the character of the two countries well though: Israel who is threatened and attacked at every turn by Iran is holding talks; Iran who thinks Israel shouldn't exist, wants to wipe them off the map and continually supplies the enemies of is asking for money. Make of that what you will, but it's easy to see which country ('s character) is stronger.

Mother claims kidnapping in son's death
I didn't get to see much of this story as I had to sleep today, but I know there was an Amber alert out for the little boy at one point.

Mother Lied, Suspect in 5-Year-Old's Death, Police Say
    Tuesday, December 05, 2006

GADSDEN,Ala. — A mother's report that her 5-year-old son wasasleep in the back of a car when it was stolen was a hoax, and she andher boyfriend were being held as suspects in the boy's death, authorities said Tuesday.

The body of Geontae Glass and the car that was reported stolen Monday morning were found Tuesday in a closed garage at a house in rural Etowah County, Sheriff James Hayes said.

Police were holding Shalinda Glass, 25, of Rainbow City, and Kevin Andre Towles, who is believed to own the house where the body was found, Hayes said.

The sheriff said they would be charged with murder. (link)

Seems it was a ruse to cover up the childs death :( I hope (if found guilty) these people get the maximum sentence available. I despise people who hurt children and murder is about as far as you can go.

The boyfriend of the mother was found with over 30k in cash, weapons and drugs. Police said he thought he was in a 'safe house'. Guess not.

What is it Misha says? Rope, tree, neck. Some assembly required.

Ok - this is my inaugural post here on LordNazh !! I've known him for going on 5 years now and he's one of the good people in life that your parents always wanted you to either become or at least befriend so that it would rub off on you.

Ok...on to posting. I see that Nazh has covered a buncha stuff pre-Thai so I'll skip some of that and go to important news of the day.

Oh...don't worry. In future posts, I'll get to John Bolton not being confirmed as Ambassador to the U.N. (shame on Lincoln Chafee - I'm so HAPPY he's no longer going to be in the Senate and taking GOP election year money that could go to worthy Senatorial candidates).

I'll also get to the Middle East and to Iraq in particular. In short -> We need to send more troops to Iraq in the short term and will need to deal with Syria and Iran in the long term (either direct militarily or indirect a la funding resistance fighters to bring down the regimes). However I agree somewhat with Nazh in that it doesn't look like Bush has much maneuvering room given the current political climate and the fact that the MSM (Mainstream Media) are enthusiastically cheering AGAINST the U.S. in this war ( I guess anyway to get back at Bush for refusing to let Al Gore steal an election is fine to them - even if it means losing a war and the allies, prestige and influence that go with such a loss - not to mention the future loss of American life when the terrorists do finally come here again.). This means the MSM can craft what message the average joe receives each day. Tell a lie often enough and it becomes the truth. Like the no WMD's even thoguh we found 500 tons of uranium in Iraq (more on that in future posts).

No... the BIG news of the day is courtesy of none other than Gwynneth Paltrow !!!

    The story can be found here;

    http://www.breitbart.com/news/na/061202155325.mf7fi2sf.html

According to Ms. Paltrow (or is it Mrs. Martin?) she prefers dinner talk in Britain over that which can be found in the U.S.

    Quote Ms. Paltrow (I'm sticking with her screen name);

"I love the English lifestyle, it's not as capitalistic as America. People don't talk about work and money, they talk about interesting things at dinner"

Ms. Paltrow has an open invitation to come to dinner at my house where I can assure her we don't talk about money or work at the table. We do engage in the issues of the day (political, social, psychological, scientific, sports-related, etc...) but any mention of work and money is covered before we sit down to eat. Just last week we discussed the "Super String" and "Chaos" theories and also the "Uncaused - First Cause" which is thought to have caused the "Big Bang" (was it God or some other outside force?). Would Ms. Paltrow find this "interesting" table conversation? Who knows? she won't tell us the criterion by which she deems dinner conversation to equal her lofty standards.

    She did leave us with this gem though;

"I like living here because I don't fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans"

Now I'll admit that our British brothers and sisters in our Mother Country (we were their colonial subjects at one time after all) do speak our language with more aplomb than us Americans do. In fact, I've seen the English language split up into "UK" and "American" when selecting an audio language on my recent trip to Hungary. And just as some people ignorantly believe that if you speak with a Southern accent and talk a bit slower that you are less-intelligent, these same types of people equate an English-accent with intelligence. I can tell you that I've known a few Brits during my 37 years on this Earth and while I have great respect for many of their intellects, there are quite a few others that, while seeming intelligent, are just empty shells. Sorta like John Kerry, only closer to actually being a Continental European that Kerry could ever hope to be. So, in my estimation, the Brits are just as intelligent as their American cousins across the Atlantic. No more or less. As far as being civilized, that is in the eye of the beholder. The Brits have quite a few centuries on us in terms of civilization but I'll still rank our 200+ years up against anyone's.

Ok that aside...I think what Ms. Paltrow is really trying to say is that she thinks America (you know - the ENTIRE country) is like the small sliver of America that she grew up in.

    What gall !!!

    Ok - "Mini-rant" below .....

As if growing up in HOLLYWOOD, the child of two famous parents (Actress Blyther Danner and Producer Bruce Paltrow) is any reflection of what real-life in America is all about???!!!!

I'm sure Ms. Paltrow thinks that talking about work and money is beneath her but please excuse the rest of flyover America for not being born with a silver foot in their mouth (A nod to Ann Richards for her insult of Bush that I just lifted).

Yes, work and money are discussed a bit more frequently in homes like mine because people like me work 60-80 hour weeks all year long. We don't work for 5-6 weeks and then have months off at a time because we just made millions in those few short weeks.

We don't have personal assistants who handle all the mundane tasks for us. We do them all !! Right down to babysitting our own kids, changing their diapers, going to the Pharmacy to get our prescriptions filled and making sure the dog's waste is picked up off the lawn.

We don't have managers to keep reminding us of where we need to be on any given day. We make do with our Blackberry's ( -- > nope we bought them ourselves, they weren't part of some $25,000 gift basket for hosting the Oscars or something ridiculous like that) and our calendars and if need-be we simply REMEMBER WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO !!!

Yes, if the rest of non-Hollywood America had a life like Ms. Paltrow I'm sure they'd think of other things to talk about at home as well.

Now, Ms. Paltrow... who enjoyed a privileged life growing up (and who has married a rock star no less) ... is living in a very chic part of England. I guess from her lofty, alabaster tower she can't see the little people toiling away in England either. She's taking the cue from other Hollywood elites in bashing America when its easy to do so.

Far easier to basically shit on America when you're in London - Ms. Paltrow. Try mustering up that disdain for Americans and your backbone when you're talking to decent "salt-of-the-earth" people who happen to live in Nowhere, USA but in fact lead more noble lives than Ms. Paltrow can ever dream to lead.

Perhaps if Ms. Paltrow wasn't so convinced she was our cultural "better" she'd see that people all around this great country are more intelligent and civilized than she realizes. But that would be too much for an elitist snob who believes that the rest of us are meant to carry her around on our shoulders, because... you know... she's Gwynneth Paltrow !!!

No matter. Given Ms. Paltrow's disdain for this country and her cowardice in bashing it overseas, I will hereafter refuse to see another movie, TV show, stage production, etc... that she appears in. I will also find out the sponsors of the productions she appears in and I will not support them by buying their products.

Stars get hyper about "censorship" when they stick their feet in their mouths and the public turns on them and refuses to patronize their work. The Dixie Chicks received a nice helping of it. Other stars have as well. This is not "censorship" but the marketplace working as it should. Hollywood Stars such as Ms. Paltrow have gotten extremely wealthy due the average fan plunking down money to go see them in whatever endeavor they are appearing in. When such stars disrespect these same fans and what they believe, the fans have EVERY right to refuse to let that dollar slip from their pocket into that entertainer's. Why should the fan..who works 60-80 hours a week sometimes and works all year long, support the obscenely wealthy lifestyle of an snob who looks down their nose at them? Why pay that $9 for a movie ticket so that Ms. Paltrow can continue jet-setting around the world and vacationing for weeks in the Caribbean (or wherever rich, spoiled, ignorant snobs vacation)??

No. Ms. Paltrow, gets not one more penny from me. Not until she comes to dinner at my house and has to not only defend her actions but try to keep up with the conversations we have. You see, if she didn't like what was talked about at the table, perhaps its not the country she's currently dining in, but her dinner companions instead.

Of course...what do I know? Apparently my social better, Ms. Paltrow, thinks me unintelligent and uncivilized.

    You be the judge.

    Nuclear Iran
A story in the Jerusalem post talks about Iran and its ongoing nuclear progam.
    Dec. 5, 2006 0:21 | Updated Dec. 5, 2006 0:39
'US won't launch preemptive strike against Teheran'
    By YAAKOV KATZ

Predicting Iran will obtain nuclear weapons by the end of the decade, the defense establishment's new and updated assessment for 2007 does not foresee the United States undertaking a preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear installations, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

The chances of an American strike are deemed "low," according to assessments by the security establishment. Israel also believes that international diplomatic efforts to stop Iran will fail, security sources said.

In an interivew with the Post in late September, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said US President George W. Bush would prevent the Iranians from obtaining a nuclear bomb.

Asked whether he felt Bush would one way or the other stop Iran going nuclear, Olmert responded: "I believe so." (link)
With the way the year's going for the President and the U.S., our last best hope may be that the Israelis get a strong leader and pre-empt the Iranian threat. I can't see the U.S. (in democratic hands) lifting a finger to stop the persians in their plans to wipe out Israel or to dominate the ME. When Iran eats enough of our carrots, they will finish what Hitler started and then the Islamic movement will wash over Europe.

I hope that before that time, someone in the world (in a leadership position) realizes what is happening with enough time left to halt it.

If Sharia ever comes to the U.S. it will be time for the 'fat lady' to sing her last song.

    Israel & Palenstine via AP

Israeli Army Kills Palestinian, Arrests 17 in West Bank Despite Decision to Scale Back Raids

    By RAVI NESSMAN
    Associated Press Writer

AP Photo JERUSALEM (AP) -- The Israeli army killed a Palestinian and arrested 17 militants Monday in raids across the West Bank, despite a decision by the military to scale back such operations in order to bolster a shaky truce with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Although the cease-fire agreement does not cover the West Bank, militants in Gaza have repeatedly threatened to break the truce and launch a wave of reprisal attacks because of Israeli military operations there.

"I wouldn't rule out ending the cease-fire in a few short days if the enemy continues like this," Hamas spokesman Abu Obeideh said. {emp. mine} (link)

Read the whole thing. Even though the story is almost pro-Israel, the title (which is what most people would see and then move on, being a 'headline' country that we are) is misleading to say the least. Only by actually reading the article (past the first few paragraphs which stay with the title theme of Israel=bad) can you see that the Israelis were after a terrorist and his acomplis that were fleeing an arrest. Then of course you have conflicting stories; Israel claims one flee-er dead, one wounded and arrested (target of the raid), the Palestinians (Hamas) claim one 'militant' wounded along with one teenager and one civilian dead.

The article goes on about the cease-fire that was put into effect last week, mentioning the 16 rockets that have been fired at Israel since (11 in the 'first hours'). The author makes no distinction to the fact that you can not have a cease-fire if both sides don't actually stop firing. He does (in his title) mention that Israel is still defending itself while saying they are scaling back on raids.

It is utterly amazing that 'journalists' have lost the ability to simply report the news without letting personal bias interfere. Granted the piece itself was better than most AP articles, but the misleading headline pretty much tells you where the reporter's loyalties lie.

    Jihad Arrests & Bolton boltin

Egypt says arrested foreigners had terror links

Egyptians security forces guard the site where one of the three explosions took place in the touristic resort of Dahab in April 2006. AFP/File Photo: Egyptians security forces guard the site where one of the three explosions took place in...

Mon Dec 4, 11:08 AM ET

CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt has said a group of foreigners arrested recentlyincluded French, US, Belgian, Syrian and Tunisian nationals who havelinks to terror groups and were recruiting Islamists for "jihad" in Iraq.

The Egyptian interior ministry said in a statement Monday it had dismantled an underground extremist organisation with links to foreign terror organisations.

French diplomatic sources had confirmed the arrest nearly two weeks ago of French Islamists in Cairo and Alexandria. Nine of them are expected to be flown back to France this week.
I hope we don't try to extradite any terrorists. If an American makes the choice to become a jihadi in Egypt, they should have to face justice in Egypt. The state department should look hard into this case and make sure this is a bona-fide case against these people, then let them rot if they are indeed terrorists. That will get rid of the whole 'geneva conventions' for terrorists bit.

In other news: John Bolton is stepping down when his appointment ends at the U.N. Lots of other bloggers and news agencies are reporting on this one (I've been asleep [heh]) so I'll keep it short. I liked Bolton and told Jeff Sessions ([R] Alabama) in a letter that we needed to get him confirmed. Alas, seems that the dems and Chafee would not give him a vote, so he decided to not work after his job is over.

I'm going to have to go with Ace's reaction over this, since the U.N. won't change no matter who we send, I still advocate jumping ship (while it's burning and not totally underwater). Unlike most leftists, I don't believe that we need a nanny to tell us what to do in the world. Since the U.N. (like almost all Dems) agreed that Iraq had wmd's and that force should be used to make them comply to resolutions, they have all become enamored with 'Bush's war'. Even in the 'make-it-up' history of the NYTimes and AP, it's a hard stretch to call a war that Congress voted for 'Bush's war'. But that is the mindset of the left (including the U.N. and most of Eurabia).

I feel sorry for my daughter and when she has kids. They will get to inherit the mess that the dems leave after this congressional run of subpoenas, trials and do-nothings.

    Bypassing Internet Censors
Read about this over at Michelle's:
Check this out. There is a new tool to circumvent government bans on Internet sites out now. It's called "Psiphon:"

Researchers at University of Toronto plan to introduce a software tool on Friday that aims to help people in countries that censor the World Wide Web.

Psiphon (pronounced sigh-fawn), a web-based utility, lets individuals in a country that censors the internet sign on to a server that gives them secure access to web pages anywhere, bypassing government restrictions.

Its creators plan to launch the software at the Protect The Net conference at the university's Munk Centre for International Studies, where psiphon emerged as a project of Citizenlab.

This is especially good news for readers in China, India, Pakistan, and the Middle East trying to access blogs and websites critical of their governments or critical of Islam.

Like they say, information wants to be free. And where there's a programmer, there's a way.
Great news for the folks in suppressed countries that can't get the news. Especially news that is critical to their government and/or religion or whatever.

As MM says: Spread the word.

    Da Boyz
    23 20

Dallas (8-4) now leads the NFC East by 2 games after dispatching the pesky Giants (6-6). It was the cowboys 4th win in the last 5 and the g-men's 4th loss in a row.

This game was especially gratifying for me, since my little brother is a big NY fan and I'm a big Dallas fan ;)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- In an NFC where nobody stands out, the Dallas Cowboys are beginning to pass for a dominant team.

Newly signed kicker Martin Gramatica booted a 46-yard field goal with 1 second left to give the Cowboys a 23-20 win over the New York Giants and a two-game lead in the NFC East. Gramatica's winning kick went straight through the uprights with plenty of power, more than making up for his wide-right miss from 44 yards to end the Cowboys' opening drive. (link)
Now the Boyz can set their sites on catching the Bears for #1 in the NFC for the playoffs. [Amazing what a change a QB can do, a friend and I have been wishing for a Romo switch since the last game of last season, since they were already out of the playoffs, why didn't Parcells give it to Romo in the Rams game?]

    Nazi? Middle East cease-fires
LGF has a thread on the latest Nazi speak over at Dkos (follow their link if you can stand it); I read the 'diary' and the comments while I could, the diary was typical of most of the Dkos diaries not written by a 'pro'. You could tell this person was really worried about something and the people at LGF were really really scary (heh). Have the people at Dkos really ever read their own comments? I would challenge this diarist to read the comments on most Dkos threads and then make a comparison to any 'right-wing' blog's comments.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas meeting with French presidential candidate Segolene royal, Sunday in Gaza. (AP)

IslamicJihad said Sunday the week-old Gaza Strip cease-fire is on the verge ofcollapse, due to what it called repeated Israeli violations.

"Calmis on the edge of collapse due to the continued Zionist violations andthe attacks against our Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza,"Abu Ahmed, a Gaza-based spokesman for the group's armed wing, said in astatement.

Notice the theme here, the palestinians are worried about Israel breaking the cease-fire and are threatening violence. I read alot and havn't seen any issues about Israel breaking the cease-fire, but I'll grant these people may know more than I do :) But how do you explain these issues?:

Rocket fired at Israel from Gaza despite truce

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip slammed into southern Israel on Sunday in the latest violation of a truce called a week ago, an Israeli military spokeswoman said."

There were no injuries caused by the rocket that struck acollective farm near the Israel-Gaza border. So far more than adozen rockets have been fired despite the ceasefire, nonecausing any casualties.

Israel's security cabinet was expected to discuss thestatus of the ceasefire later on Sunday, media reports said.

This is the news I've been reading about the Israel/Palestine issue, rockets were falling INTO Israel from the Gaza strip and not the other way around. The palestinians have not been serious about this cease-fire since it started. They will ultimetly break the cease-fire in 'retaliation' of Israel's aggressions (heh).
Peace will never be possible until both sides acutally want peace.

    Florida SEC Champs

Florida Gators Florida beats Arkansas by 10. Now it's up to the pollsters and the computers to decide between Michigan and Florida.

It would help kill the BCS quicker if Michigan goes, but it would be 'right' if Florida went.

Once upon a time, losses mattered (when you had them) and you could NEVER have one at the end of the season and survive. Until the BCS (yes Florida lost to FSU and then went on to play for the title in '96, but other people lost to put Florida there, they didn't lose and STAY 2nd).

I truly think Florida can and will beat Ohio State (if they go). We already know that Michigan can't beat OSU. They lost already to them and it should have been by 11 (phantom pass interference calls shouldn't count).

Tomorrow will be a busy day with the bowls all being decided. I'll try to post some on that. Lots of news happening today too, but I'm in 'football' mode, so I've been reading alot but not posting (heh). I start midnights tomorrow night, so not sure on the posting, but if it's slow at work, I may get some late night posts in. (link)

    BCS Implications

    USC TrojansThe dream ends.

UCLA has beaten USC 13-9 in California today to end USC's chances of 3 straight Championship games. Now it will be between Michigan and Florida (winning) to play Ohio State.

UCLA's defense played great and stymied the Trojan offense all day. The Bruins offense didn't play well, but played just good enough to get the job done.

At halftime Florida leads Arkansas 17-7 in the SEC Championship. If they win, they'll have a legitimate argument for playing OSU.
